Jeepney Phaseout: Does Commuters Agree or Disagree?

Good morning everyone! I am Kurt Matthew C. Ordinario and I’m here to discuss and
give some of my own opinions about the Jeepney phaseout. In this world, most countries are
aiming for modernization to make their country better and advance. In the Philippines, the
current issue is about turning old fashion transportation into a more modern one. Jeepney
phaseout in the Philippines is a complex on-going issue. Each person have a different reaction
what will be the better outcome for our country, sticking to our traditional mode of transportation
or completely phasing it out and deploying new and modern vehicles for transportation.
Supporters argue it’s for modernization and environmental reason, while majority of the
community says that it has an impact on cultural identity, tradition and livelihood.

As a student, I both agree and disagree about this issue. I agree since modernizing
jeepney can lead to improved safety features, such as ensuring the well-being of passengers. It
also enhances the overall quality of public transportation providing commuters with more
comfortable and reliable options. And if those modern jeeps are electric, it can lessen the air
pollution especially in our country. In the other side, I also disagree about it. Having to phase out
this traditional transportation will be the cause of employment to jeepney drivers. They have to
find a way to possibly buy those modernize jeepney that could lead them in debt. Some
commuters highly disagree since having these jeeps, transportation fare can sky rocket.

We Filipinos have to address their concern since drivers and operators might face
challenge such as financial problems just to keep working and transition into newer vehicles. It’s
already hard for them thinking about how they can turn their life around. We need to understand
that the economic impact on jeepney drivers and the cultural significance of these iconic
vehicles. Once again I’m Kurt Matthew C. Ordinario and thank you for listening to my speech.
