Lesson Idea Name: All About the Rainforest

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd Grade/Science

Content Standard Addressed: S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the
similarities and differences between plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Digital Citizen -- 1.2.b Online Behavior able to do by the end of this lesson:
Students engage in positive, safe, legal and I would like my students to know the ecosystem
ethical behavior when using technology, of the rainforest, differentiate between its layers
including in social interactions online or when and animals, and know its primary map location.
using networked devices. They should also be able to communicate on its
habitat, and all about the Amazon rainforest
geographic region.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?
The learning goal is for my students to be able to talk about the unique features of the rainforest,
and ultimately for them to write a two-paragraph summary, posting it on Padlet, showcasing their
knowledge of the plants, animals, and habitat of the different rainforests in the world.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: To begin our lesson, I will start with a video clip all about the
rainforest to hook my students and get them interested. Then, we will look at a poster board with
many different facts on the tropical rainforest biome. They will be able to communicate on which
part they found most interesting and collaborate with their peers by submitting a comment on
Padlet with their facts. Next, the students will watch a video all about plant and animal adaptation in

the rainforest, showing how they are able to adapt to the harsh life in the rainforest. After this, the
students will pretend that they are explorers, walking through the rainforest! They will have to write
a paper all about the sights and sounds in the rainforest. Next, the students will do a fun, hands-on
learning project, by creating their very own rainforest at home! They will be able to upload a picture
on Padlet showcasing their rainforest. They can also communicate with their classmates by liking
their pictures and leaving comments as well. To test their knowledge, the students will have to
complete a quiz on Quizziz, and after, write a two-paragraph summary all about what they have
learned about the rainforest.
Managing student learning:
The tools used in this lesson will cause a shift in the behavior of the students, because on Padlet,
they will be actively engaged and participating with one another, which shows they will be social as
well. There will be multiple opportunities for them to showcase their knowledge by including
responding to passages on Padlet and sharing what they have learned. They will also show their
imaginative and side by writing a fiction paper all about their walk through the rainforest, and their
creative side by creating a rainforest, posting a picture of it, and then complete a quiz and summary
paper of all they have learned. This lesson with the tools used will cause for much active
participation. One way I will allow for time-on-time task is by getting kids chatting as they are being
assessed. After our Quizziz quiz, I will have my students “co-engage" after that assessment so they
can reflect on correct and incorrect responses and learn throughout that assessment process.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

During my lesson, I will represent all aspects of the UDL framework. For representation, I will be
providing information on the rainforest in a variety of ways. Everything will be in order from Step 1
through Step 7, and they will have access to the materials. For engagement, on one of the
assignments they will have a choice on which topic to comment on, sharing their thoughts with their
classmates on what they found most interesting in the facts of the rainforest biome. Last, there will
be plenty opportunities for action and engagement because I will allow the students multiple ways
to interact with the content and show what they have learned by writing a summary, taking a quiz,
and hand-on learning with building their own rainforest, showcasing how creative they can be.
Reflective Practice:
I strongly believe that Padlet is a tool to be implemented in the classroom, because of how
interactive and versatile it is. Students can reply, like, share, post pictures, post videos, and more on
this platform. There are many ways that students can interact and work on Padlet, so it will fit the
needs of a variety of students, from visual learners to audio learners, Padlet can cover it. It also gives
students a chance to be digitally responsible and showcase good digital citizenship, as well as
keeping with the COPPA and FERPA laws, to ensure that each student is protected and safe online. I
look forward to using Padlet to implement collaboration among the students on various projects and
assignments. Because on Padlet, you can add voice, video, pictures and more, I can use it for various
subjects and assignments to keep my students engaged and active in the lesson, showcasing what
they’ve learned. This is an excellent tool for various learning styles, and I really look forward to using
it in my future classroom.
