Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle Stories

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd grade/ Science
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the life cycles of different living organisms.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson:
Creative Communicator- Element 1.6.d- I would like the students to be able to explain
the students will present content that has the lifecycle of a nonfiction animal. They will
been customized to the message they are walk through each piece of the stages that
going to communicate to the intended the animal moves through the animal’s life.
audience.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
The student will express the lifecycle of a chosen animal through a story. They will
communicate each stage of the lifecycle of the animal.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): PowerPoint
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding X Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating X Creating
How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will work individually and choose a nonfiction animal. They will tell me which animal
they picked so I can make sure that it is a real animal, and that not all the students are doing
the same animal. I would explain that we are going to fill in the lifecycle graphic organizer to
help us keep track of the stage we are on. I would explain how to create a story using
PowerPoint and allow them time to complete this step. I would then come in and explain that
we are going to be recording ourselves reading the story. I would show them which buttons

to push and how to move the slides. I would then give them time to record one at a time in a
quiet corner of the room. After this I would show the students how to submit the assignment
and then I would play each story for the class, and we will discuss what the lifecycle of the
animal is. The students will then ask questions about the story.
Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
I plan to use this tool to allow students to be creative and grow their knowledge. This will
promote student learning because when you add in interests that the students have with the
content that they have to learn they are more likely to learn the information. I will manage
technology in the classroom to make sure that they are not getting off task. Students will
have to draw the lifecycle so they can track what step they are on. They will be using the
icons and pictures that they find on my site that I have located for them so that they are
staying safe on the internet.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson idea supports the principle for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by including
representation, action, and expression, and engagement. This represents representation by
giving them different ways to interact with the material. Students get to choose which animal
they are going to make the story on. In the end the students will learn about a good amount
of animals. This lesson represents action and expression by allowing them to show what they
have learned in a creative way. Students are able to insert images and pictures to express the
information they are presenting. This lesson supports engagement by allowing the students
to gage what they express and it allows the teacher to see how the students are
understanding the topic and how they are interacting with the topic. In this lesson I can give
students many different types of motivation. The students will have the will to make sense of
the information.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This enhances the students’ learning by giving them a choice on who they want to express
the information that they have learned. This also gives students the time that they need to
complete the activity. Students are given expectations and are expected to follow them. This
layout will be helpful for students to make the assignment. This lesson allows the teacher the
time to see creativity and see what helps the students learn.
