Practicum Week : 3

Date: 13 July 2021

Journal Topic : Students are curious to learn when the lesson is started with a game –
word search.
1. Issues that should be focused :
When I was planning my lesson, I decided to arrange a game session at the set
induction instead of a discussion podium where students have to share the opinions. So
what I did was turning Word Search into an innovative learning tool. At the beginning of
the lesson, this activity has deeply attracted the students to be very engaged during this
activity as most of them had not done this activity before.
2. Focused Issue Analysis (Factor and Effect Issue) :
The topic that we were learning that day is quite abstract – requesting for permission. So
I hope I can use an activity that can attract the students’ attention. By doing this, the
students actually have a better concept to understand the topic.
3. Literature Review Based On The Issue (Past Experience or Study Research):
For the Teaching of English as Second Language, learning and mastering the English
language can be challenging, daunting and sometimes dull. One of the important
elements in designing an effective lesson is ensuring an engaging set induction to initiate
the learning process and develop the proper mindset for the students to embrace the full
content of the lesson (Dyson & Pine, 1996; Weiller, 1992). Set induction is the
preliminary part of a lesson where the instructor introduces the introduction to capture
learners‟ attention. Hence, it is a preparatory stage to get learners ready and „set‟ for the
day‟s learning. It helps get learners in the right state of mind and mental readiness in
preparatory to understand and learn the lesson for the day.
4. Suggestion and Idea to Solve Problems: Based on the analysis that I have done
according to the issues, I have a few suggestions i) Create an interesting activity ii)
Implement reward system to encourage students to speak
5. Time Period : 1 Week
6. Follow-up Action : An effective execution of set induction is able to direct students‟
attention to the topic of the day, and in this process, establish a connection to the
students‟ prior knowledge and experiences. So it is crucial to have a good set induction
to start of the lesson to get the students’ attention.

7. Followed-Up Date: 16.7.2013
Rujukan Lahkar Labanya (2013). Use of the
