What does LOLER apply to?
LOLER applies to the use of lifting equipment provided as work
equipment.
What does LOLER Contain?
LOLER contains approved Code of Practice and guidance for those who

• Step 1: Determine Volume

determine volume.
• Step 2: Determine what material the object is made of/Density

Look up the weight per unit volume for that material.
• Steps 3: Determine weight of object

Multiply the weight per unit volume times the calculated volume to get
the calculated weight of the object.

C.E Marking
• CE marking is the symbol as shown on the top of this
page. The letters CE are the abbreviation of French
phrase “conformite’ Europeene” which literally means
European conformity.
• The term initially used was EC mark and it was officially
replaced by CE marking in the directive 93/68/EEC in 1993.
• CE marking is now used in all EU official documents

Third Party Inspection
• Inspections are to be conducted by an accredited third party

company every 6 months.
• Inspection work scope will cover as minimum as follows:
 Pad Eyes
 Fixed Lifting Equipment Certification: overhead runway
beams, winches, swing jibs and other fixed lifting
equipment.
 Cranes and Forklifts. om

 Baskets, Containers, Gas Racks and Lifting Frames.

• A load applied by the competent person for the purpose of

a test.
• This load appears on reports of thorough examination if a

• Web slings can be used for specialized lifts around the Rig as a last
resort but not to be used for picking up tubulars from the Cat walk
to the Rig floor.
• Any web sling used in a load-carrying capacity should be
protected from abrasion by padding when fastened or drawn over
square corners or sharp or rough surfaces.
• Web slings must be regularly inspected for damage.

Pre-use Examination
• Examine sheaves for wear in the rope groove, cracks or distortion.
• Ensure all grease ports are clean and unblocked and the machine
is well lubricated.
• Examine swivel head fittings and check for wear / stretch.
• Examine (if possible) thrust bearing / washer and ensure
smoothness of operation.
• Examine upper load pin / spigots and check for wear / distortion.

• The lower hook is the weakest point in a chain hoist .Any

deviation from a circle is evidence of overloading or improper use.

involve basic slinging practices, eg: the handling of pipe, tubulars,
containers, the loading / unloading of trucks, etc usually
performed by the deck crew, warehouse or yard personnel.

• These lifts can be performed by personnel who have passed

assessment on a Banksman/Slinger course and/or been involved

in such operations for 6 months.
• Their competence should be verified by qualified skills assessors.
Planning for routine lifts:
• The use of generic plans and toolbox talks is usually adequate for
this level of lifting operation.
• Ensure there are no changes to the original plan.

Simple Lifts definition:
