LOLER applies to the use of lifting equipment provided as work
equipment.
What does LOLER Contain?
LOLER contains approved Code of Practice and guidance for those who
work with any lifting equipment provided at work or for the use of

Load Markings

• R: the rating, ¡.e. the maximum gross

mass of the container and its cargo, in kg
• T: the tare mass, i.e. the mass of an empty
container (without cargo and excluding
lifting set), in kg
• P: the payload, ¡.e. the maximum

om
permissible mass of cargo which may be
safely transported by the container, in kg
• NOTE: P = R - T
l.c
Load Calculation
• Step 1: Determine Volume
oi

Measure the object to get dimensions (length, width and height) and
determine volume.

• Step 2: Determine what material the object is made of/Density

Look up the weight per unit volume for that material.

• Steps 3: Determine weight of object

Multiply the weight per unit volume times the calculated volume to get
the calculated weight of the object.

phrase “conformite’ Europeene” which literally means
European conformity.
• The term initially used was EC mark and it was officially
replaced by CE marking in the directive 93/68/EEC in 1993.
• CE marking is now used in all EU official documents

Automatic closing” models allow the user to properly
attach the clamp to the top edge of steel in hard to reach
applications, eliminating the need for ladders or other
potentially unsafe devices.

Horizontal Clamp usage

When using horizontal plate clamps don’t exceed the

sling angles and don’t lift more than one plate at a time
unless the clamps are suitable.

Instructions while using plat clamps

l.c
• Check that the plate is clean and free from mill scale, dirt, oil and
grease.
oi

• Double check that the jaws are locked.

• Use an adequate number of clamps to balance the load.

Restrictions while using plat clamps

• Attach clamps to the side of the plate
• Fast lower onto the floor as this could cause the clamp to open
and release the plate.
• Lift more than one plate at a time.

Lifting Plan
Types of Lift:
 Routine lifts
 Simple (Non-Routine lifts)
 Complicated (Non-Routine lifts)
 Complex (Non-Routine lifts)

Routine Lifts definition:

om
• Uncomplicated lifts that are performed on a regular basis, which
involve basic slinging practices, eg: the handling of pipe, tubulars,
containers, the loading / unloading of trucks, etc usually
performed by the deck crew, warehouse or yard personnel.
l.c
Minimum Qualifications required for routine lifts:
• These lifts can be performed by personnel who have passed
oi

assessment on a Banksman/Slinger course and/or been involved

in such operations for 6 months.
• Their competence should be verified by qualified skills assessors.
Planning for routine lifts:
• The use of generic plans and toolbox talks is usually adequate for
this level of lifting operation.
• Ensure there are no changes to the original plan.

Rigging and Lifting Manual

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/
https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Egyptian Drilling Company

EDC Training Center

Risk Assessment:
• If there are changes to original plan, a further risk assessment
must be undertaken.
Supervision:
• By appointed lift controller who also allocates duties to others.

Simple Lifts definition:

• Lifts that involve the use of basic hoisting equipment, eg: a crane
om
or manual hoist (suspended from dedicated lifting structures such
as pad-eyes or runway beams) directly above the load.
• Lifts would also have to be out with sensitive, difficult or
restricted areas. Loads would also require to have certified lifting
l.c
points or be relatively easy to sling.
Minimum Qualifications required for Simple lifts:
• These lifts can be performed by personnel who have passed
oi

assessment on the Technician level – Rigging and Lifting course

and/ or been involved in such operations for 12 months.
• Their competence should be verified by qualified skills assessors.
Planning for simple lifts:
• May have a written plan or alternatively, a method documented
in a Rigging and Lifting hand book.

Rigging and Lifting Manual

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/
https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Egyptian Drilling Company

EDC Training Center

Risk Assessment:
• A basic risk assessment must be undertaken but need not be
recorded.
Supervision:
• By operator actually performing the work.

Complicated Lifts definition:

• Lifts that are difficult due to the nature of the load, eg: awkward
om
shape, offset or high center of gravity, fragile, containing liquids,
no lifting attachments/difficult to sling, etc.
• The loads may also require to be rotated or cross-hauled involving
two or more sets of rigging and/or tandem lifting with cranes. Lifts
l.c
of an extended duration i.e. covering two or more work shifts.
Minimum Qualifications required for complicated lifts:
• This type of lift must be performed by Riggers qualified to
oi

National Standards e.g EMTA level 2 / ECITB Level 3 (or

equivalent) and/or have 5yrs experience.
• Their competence should be verified by qualified skills assessors.
Planning for complicated lifts:
• Written plans produced by ‘The Competent Person’ combined
with toolbox talks are required for this level of lifting operation.

Rigging and Lifting Manual

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Egyptian Drilling Company

EDC Training Center

Risk Assessment:
• A Risk Assessment must be undertaken and controlling measures
recorded.
Supervision:
• By ‘The Competent Person’ with engineering support as required.

Complex Lifts definition:

• These lifts could be any of the first three categories but with
om
additional hazards, eg: extremely heavy loads, confined spaces,
restricted headroom, lifting over unprotected plant or equipment,
lifting sub-sea, lifts involving divers, lifts involving floating cranes,
lifts where personnel are the load, ie lifting operations or
l.c
conditions which would merit additional engineering input.
Minimum Qualifications required for complex lifts:
• This type of lift must be performed by Riggers qualified to
oi

National Standards eg: EMTA level 2 / ECITB Level 3 (or

equivalent) and/or have 5yrs experience.
• Their competence should be verified by qualified skills assessors.
• In addition, engineering support must be available as deemed
necessary.
Planning for complex lifts:
• Written plans produced by ‘The Competent Person’ plus job packs
combined with toolbox talks are required for this level of lifting
operation.
