Reading

Read the magazine interview.

In 2004, there was a tsunami near Indonesia in the Indian Ocean. It was one of the worst natural
disasters in history and it killed nearly 230,000 people in 14 countries. Maria Watts had a lucky
escape.

Reporter: Where were you when the tsunami happened?

Maria: I wasn’t at work because I was on holiday with my boyfriend. I live in Colombo,
Sri Lanka and we were on holiday in Unawatuna. We were having breakfast in our
hotel when my boyfriend Ewan saw a very big wave in the sea. He said it looked
like a storm!
Reporter: What did you do?
Maria: Ewan shouted to me while I was standing on the balcony. The wave hit the hotel.
It was nearly two metres high. We tried to find somewhere to take shelter. It was
difficult because water was coming in all around us and the hotel was shaking.
Reporter: What happened next?
Maria: Well, the tsunami hit the hotel as we were standing there and the water was very
high all around us. Fortunately, the water didn’t get higher while we were holding
onto the balcony.
Reporter: Were you hurt?
Maria: No, I was very lucky, but Ewan was badly hurt while he was trying to help people.
A part of a tree went past him very fast and hit him.
Reporter: How did you feel?
Maria: I felt very scared! When the water went down, lots of people were shouting and a
lot of buildings were badly damaged. Fortunately, after rescuers took Ewan to
hospital, we were safe.
Reporter: How did your life change because of the tsunami?
Maria: Well, we helped a lot of people in Sri Lanka and we still work with a charity there.
I don’t feel scared about swimming in the sea, but I now see how small humans are
compared to nature.
