CHAPTER 1

Introduction

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, it is

crucial to find innovative and effective methods to engage

students and enhance their learning experiences. As

educators, we constantly seek ways to make complex

historical concepts and their relevance more accessible to

students.

Through the years, Traditional classroom teaching

methods often rely on passive learning, where students

passively receive information from teachers through lectures

and textbooks. This approach may not fully engage students

and may hinder their ability to grasp complex historical

concepts.

To address this issue, the flipped classroom approach

will be implemented which involves the integration of

technology and active learning strategies and student-

centered.

The flipped classroom model of instruction is a

relatively new teaching strategy attempting to improve

student engagement and performance by moving the lecture

outside the classroom via technology and moving homework and

exercises with concepts inside the classroom via learning

activities (Bergmann & Sams, 2012) The core idea with this

learning strategy is to flip the common instructional

approach: instruction that used to occur in class is now

accessed at home, in advance of class, via teacher created

videos and interactive lessons, and work that used to occur

outside of the classroom is now completed in class in the

presence of the teacher. Using this inductive approach,

Tucker (2012) stated class becomes the place to “work

through problems, advance concepts, and engage in

collaborative learning”. Such use of class time could

potentially give students the opportunity to learn how to

think for themselves by being actively engaged in the

History content. Bringing technology devices, students rely

on social reasons into the classroom may also increase

student participation and achievement(Pellas, 2017). Jukes

et al. (2010) note the importance of adapting classrooms to

meet the learning needs of modern-day students rather than

continuing to teach to the needs of students of generations

past. Just as student learning evolves over time, the

classroom needs to evolve by incorporating technology

(Burgoyne & Eaton, (2018) By incorporating technology,

teachers are able to flip the traditional lecture style

classroom upside down and administer lectures digitally

outside of class and thereby create an active and engaging

student-centered learning environment during class (Ng,

2014; Pellas, 2017).

In the flipped classroom model, many advantages are

mentioned. Particularly, it is at the top of the list that

it gives flexibility to the classroom environment, gives

students the chance to reach the information at any time,

and brings the time top which is spared for the classroom

applications. These advantages can be listed in detail as

follows (Herreid & Schiller, 2013);1) Each student can act

properly to their own learning speed.2) Doing homework in

class provides a better perspective in determining the

situations in which students are experiencing problems and

understanding their learning styles.3) The teacher can

arrange the content more easily and transmit it to the

students 7/24.4) It increases the levels of success,

interest and participation of the students.5) Teachers can

spend more time with students on original research.6)

Students may be given the opportunity to work with more

scientific equipment only in their class.7) Students who

miss the course due to various reasons can reach the course

videos anywhere they want.8) The student is referred to

thinking about the subject both inside and outside the

classroom. 9) Students participate more actively in the

learning process (Herreid & Schiller, 2013)

During the diagnostic Assessment conducted in the third

quarter, it was found out that the Most Essential Learning

Competency (MELC): The Implications of the World War in the

History of the Asian Country has the lowest Mean Percentage

Score of 29%. Additionally, last School year the Mean

Percentage Score of the same Competency was 30.20%. Hence

these were the reasons that the researcher thought of

conducting the study on the use of flipped classroom to

improve the students’ performance in The Implications of the

World War in the History of the Asian Country of the Grade 7

students.

Hence, this study aims to determine the effectiveness

of the flipped classroom approach in improving the academic

performance of Grade 7 students in understanding the

implications of the World War in the history of an Asian

country. The World War is a significant historical event

that has shaped the course of nations and societies

worldwide. Understanding its implications is crucial for

students to develop a comprehensive understanding of their

country's history and its connections to the global context.

The findings of this action research will contribute to

the existing body of knowledge particularly on the

effectiveness of the flipped classroom approach in history

education. It is hoped that the results will provide

insights and recommendations for educators and policymakers

to enhance history instruction and improve the academic

performance of Grade 7 students in understanding the

implications of the World War in the history of the Asian

country.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this action research is improve the

students’ academic performance of Grade 7 students in

understanding the implications of the World War in the

history of an Asian country using Flipped Classroom.

The World War is a significant historical event that

has shaped the course of nations and societies worldwide. It

is essential for students to develop a comprehensive

understanding of the implications of this event in their

country's history and its connections to the global context.

However, traditional classroom teaching methods often rely

on passive learning, which may hinder students' ability to

grasp complex historical concepts and engage actively in

their learning.

By implementing the flipped classroom approach, this

study aims to provide an alternative instructional strategy

that promotes active learning, critical thinking, and deeper

engagement with the historical content. In the flipped

classroom model, students will have access to pre-recorded

video lectures, readings, and other learning materials

before the class session. This allows students to review the

content at their own pace and come prepared to engage in

interactive activities, discussions, and collaborative

projects during class time.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aims to improve the Academic

performance of Grade 7 on the Implications of the World War

in the History of the Asian Country using flipped classroom.

More specifically, the study aims to answer the

following sub-problems:

1. What are the Pretest and Posttest Scores of the

Respondents?
