a dental assistant

UNIT
There aren’t many. Definitely backache and neck pain. Very often you sit or stand
in strange positions for hours. Infections are another drawback of being a dental
assistant. Because we work with people, we are exposed to their blood, saliva
and many infectious diseases.
This is why you have to wear a face mask and gloves at all times. Sometimes pa-
tients have anxiety attacks and get aggressive, so that’s never fun. In such cases
we give them nitrous oxide, “laughing gas”, to make them feel more relaxed. But
it’s still a stressful situation for the staff. Sometimes patients test your patience
on purpose. You mustn’t lose your temper then and should always keep calm
no matter how difficult the patient is being.
The job itself is really interesting and rewarding. There is a lot of variety – every
day is a new challenge. The pay is good. You meet a lot of interesting people from
all walks of life. There is a lot of flexibility – you can work full-time or part-time.
There are quite a few. First of all, you have to prepare the work area for treat-
ments and procedures. You need to prepare the instruments and any other mate-
rials the dentist might need during the procedure. You have to clean and sterilise
everything. You need to set up the dental unit, prepare patients for treatments,
that is seat and drape them. During the procedure you are responsible for mixing
and placing materials on instruments and passing them to the dentist. You have
to be focused all the time and know when to do what – like use a saliva ejector to
prevent pooling of saliva. Good timing is everything!
To do this job you must like working with people. You should be empathetic be-
cause sometimes patients are afraid or nervous and you need to comfort them.
A good sense of humour also helps. You must be well-organized and detail-ori-
ented: you sterilise instruments, prepare materials, are responsible for patient
safety, so it is important to follow protocols. You also need to be a good listener
and pay attention to what the patients are saying. If you don’t, you could miss
an important piece of information – like what they are allergic to and as a result
put their life at risk.

8. Look at some sentences from the text. Match the words in bold
in sentences 1‒6 with the meanings a-e (as in the example).
You will have to use one meaning twice.
Spójrz na niektóre zdania z tekstu. Dopasuj pogrubione słowa w zdaniach
1‒6 do znaczeń a-e (jak w przykładzie). Jedno znaczenie będzie trzeba
wykorzystać dwukrotnie.
You (1) shouldn’t study to become a dental assistant if you dislike biology
and chemistry.
You (2) don’t have to know everything, but you have to have a solid knowledge
of the basics.
You (3) mustn’t lose your temper then and (4) should always keep calm no mat-
ter how difficult the patient is being.
You (5) have to sterilise all the instruments and make sure the dentist can reach
them easily.
To do this job you (6) must like working with people.
USEFUL TIPS
Jaka jest różnica między must i have to? Oba wyrażenia oznaczają właściwie to samo
(ale tylko w formie twierdzącej!), czyli „musieć coś zrobić”.
Have to używamy wtedy, kiedy to ktoś inny (albo sytuacja zewnętrzna) wymusza na nas
określone zachowanie.
Warto jednak pamiętać, że bez względu na to, czy powiemy I have to go to the dentist,
czy I must go to the dentist, zostaniemy zrozumiani przez rodzimych użytkowników
języka angielskiego!
