TYPES OF
HARDWARE
Input devices
Input devices are hardware used to translate
words, sounds, images, and movements that
humans recognize right into a form that the
system unit can process.
keyboard
A keyboard is an input device that you use
to enter data, such as - text, numbers, and
other commands into a computer or
electronic device. The keyboard comes with

screens. It ca n also be used to run co m pu te r
programs, se lect item s & m an ipulat e obje cts in
the computer world.
Trackpad
A trackpad is a touchsensitive
surface found on laptops and
some desktop keyboards. It
serves as an alternative to the
mouse, enabling users to control
the cursor and perform gestures.
scanner
As the name suggests, it scans
images, documents, etc., and
converts them into digital form
and that can be further edited
and used. It works just like a
Xerox machine.
TracK ball
It is a device much like an upside-down
mouse. It does not use much space for
movement like a mouse. As the
trackball remains stationary and the
user moves the ball in various
directions, it affects the screen
movements directly.
light pen
It is a light-sensitive device and it is
touched to the CRT screen where it
can detect, a raster on the screen as
it passes by and, with the help of this
user can draw anything like lines,
figures, or any objects.
Joystick
A joystick is a hand-held input device
used to control the movement or
actions of a digital object on a computer
screen. It typically consists of a handle
or a lever that can be tilted or pushed in
different directions to provide input to a
computer or a gaming console.
microphone
It is a kind of voice input system that
can be attached to a computer system
to record sounds. It converts human
speech or voice into electrical signals.
This electrical signal is processed by
the computer and the word is
recognized.
optical character reader
It is used to detect alphanumeric
characters that are written or printed on
paper using a low-frequency light
source. This light is absorbed by the dark
areas and reflected by the light areas,
now this reflected light is received by the
photocells. It is like a scanner.
bar code reader
It is used to read bar codes
and convert them into electric
pulse which will further
processed by the computer.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Output device is any piece of computer
hardware system used to connect the outcomes
of data processing carried through an
information processing system (such as
computer) which converts the electronically
generated data into human-readable form.
MONITOR
A monitor is an electronic visual display
that connects to your CPU and it is used
for displaying images, text, videos,
games, web pages, and more. The most
common types of monitors are CRT
(catho de ray tube ), LCD (liquid crysta l
display), and LED (light-emitting diode).
printer
A printer is a hardware and output device whose
main function is to print digital documents or
images on paper or other printable materials.
Printers are used to pr int various things, such
as - Document Printing, Photo Printing, Graphics
Printing, and 3D Printing.
plotter
It is similar to a printer but potters are
large in size. A plotter is used to
generate large drawings, architectural
blueprints, etc. on paper and these are
high-quality images and drawings and
large in size.
speaker
It is a very common output device and
it give s sound as an output. Speaker is
generally used to play music or
anything having sound.
headphone
Headphones are also known as earphones.
Headphones are output devices with which you
can liste n to any so und signals tra nsm itted by an
electronic device. These are hardware devices
that produce audio privately after being connected
to sm artp ho nes or co mpu ters th roug h a wireless
connection.
projector
A projector is a display output
device because it receives images
from a computer and transfer
those computer images to a wall,
surface, or projection screen.
SOUND CARD
or
A sound card is also known as an audio card
a
soundboard and it is also a hardware component in
ta.
computer that manages and processes audio da
d
The main function of a sound card is to produce soun
e
and play it through speakers and headphones. Th
dio
other function of sound cards is to convert digital au
or
into analog signals that can be played by speakers
headphones.
video CARD
Computer Video cards are internal inbuilt hardware
output devices. Computer Video cards are internal
inbuilt hardware output devices. Every PC user,
especially gamers, knows very well that a video card
is one of the essential components of a computer
and laptop. So that while playing videos and games,
the cards do not get slow down, they work stably,
and everything goes smoothly.
STORAGE DEVICES
Output device is any piece of computer
hardware system used to connect the outcomes
of data processing carried through an
information processing system (such as
computer) which converts the electronically
generated data into human-readable form.
CD (Compact disc)
A CD is circular in shape and made up of thin
platted glass and plastic polycarbonate material. It
has a storage capacity of 600 MB to 700 MB of
data. It has a standard size of 12 cm with a hole in
the center of about 1.5 cm and 1.2 mm in
thickness. There are basically 3 types of CDs,
which are:
TYPES OF CDs
CD-ROM (CD – Read Only
Memory)
CD-R (CD-Recordable)

CD-RW(CD-Rewritable)
hard disk drive
A hard disk drive is a piece of hardware inside
a computer that stores information. It is used
to store various types of data, such as -
Documents, Pictures, Videos & Computer
applications, which can be accessed when
needed. A hard disk drive is a data storage
device in computers and the main function of
this storage device is to store data for long-
term usage.
optical drive
Optical Drives are used in PCs to read and
write CDs and DVDs. The optical drive reads
the data from the disc, which can be
transformed into a digital file that is
readable by the computer. Optical drives are
used to backup files, read and write data,
and data transfer from one disc to another.
solid state dr ive
A Solid State Drive is also a storage device of
a computer and this storage device is faster,
more reliable, and quieter compared to the
hard disk drive. Solid state drive is used to
store various data, such as - Documents,
Videos, Audio, Pictures, and software. This
storage device makes your computer function
faster and more efficiently.
network interface c ard
A Network Interface Card is also known as
a network adapter or network interface
controller. A Network Interface Card is a
hardware network component that is
capable of connecting a computer or other
device to the network and communicating
with other devices on that network.
RAM
RAM is a type of computer
memory that stores iRAM is a
volatile memory in a computer.
RoM
ROM stands for Read Only Memory
and this memory is also a type of
computer memory. ROM is able to
store data permanently because this
memory is the permanent memory of
a computer.
Motherboard
The motherboard is the backbone of our
computer system and it is also the main
circuit board that connects all the
computer components in a single board,
such as - RAM, ROM, processor, Hard disk,
Monitor, Sound card, and graphics card.
cpu
A CPU stands for Central Processing Unit
and it is also the brain of a computer. CPU is
a small size powerful chip that processes all
the calculations and tasks needed to
computer operate. It is able to read and
execute instructions given by the user, such
as - Running apps or games, adding
numbers, and many other types of
instructions.
Cooling fan
The cooling fan is a very important component
for your computers. If your CPU fan is not working
correctly, your components of computer
hardware will be heating may cause damage
computer system. The main function of a CPU
fan is to cool the internal hardware components
in computer. It expels hot air and also helps to
remove dust from inside the computer.
POWER SUPPLY
A power supply unit is an electrical
component of our computer that provides the
necessary power to operate a computer.
Computers are powered by electricity, and
the power supply converts the alternating
current (AC) from the electric outlet into
direct current (DC).
SOFTWARE a g e n era l te rm fo r th e
Softw a re is
various kinds of programs used to
operate co m p u te rs a nd re la te d

TWO MAIN CATEGORIES OF
SOFTWARE

APPLICATION SYSTEM
SOFTWARE SOFTWARE
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Application Software, often referred to
simply as "apps" or "programs," is a class of
software specifically designed to perform
various tasks and functions for end-users.
Application software thus includes word
processors, spreadsheets, database
management, inventory and payroll programs,
and many other “applications.”
