SOLVING RATIONAL FUNCTIONS

A rational function is a function that is the ratio of
polynomials. Any function of one variable, x, is called a
rational function if, it can be represented as f(x) =
p(x)/q(x), where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials such
that q(x) ≠ 0.

EXAMPLE:
x+ 3
2
x +12 x+ 27

The zero product property states

To find the domain, find the value for that if a⋅b=0 then either a or b
which the denominator is equal to 0. equal zero. This basic property
Factor the quadratic and apply the zero helps us solve equations like
(x+2)(x-5)=0
product principle.

x+3=0 x+9=0
x=-3 x=-9
{x|x∈ R ≠−3 ,−9 }

Factor the numerator and the denominator. Identify the factors

that are the same numerator and denominator, and simplify.

Solving Inverse Function
The inverse function is a function with domain B and range A given
that the original function has domain B and range A.
This inverse function of function f is denoted by f-1. It is defined by
the equation f-1(y)=x if and only if f (x)=y for any y in range B. Since
both are functions, then a function has to be one-on-one for its inverse
to be a function at the same time. If it is a many-to-one function, its
inverse is one-to-many which is not a function.
To find the inverse of a one-to-one function, consider the following:
a. Express the function in form y+f(x);
b. Interchange the x and y variables on the equation;
c. Solve for y in terms of x.

Example:
6 x +10
Find the inverse of the rational function f (x) x−5

The SSG officers of Rio Tuba National High School are
planning for a JS Prom. The allocated budget is Php 20,000
and an additional of Php 300 for meal expenses each guests.
The organization received an amount of Php 80,000 from itd
external stakeholders.
a.) Write the total allocated budget as a function of the
number of guests.
x= number of guests.
f (x)= total allocated budget
f (x)= 20,000 + 300x
b.) Find the inverse of the function.
y= 20,000 + 300x
Interchange y and x.
x= 20,000 + 300x
Solve for y in terms of x.
x−20,000 300 y

300 300
−1 x−20,000
f ( x )=

c.) Find the possible number of guest for a budget of Php

80,000.
−1 80,000−20,000
f ( 80,000 )=
3000

=200 Number of possible

Solving Exponential Functions

An exponential function is a Mathematical function in the
form f (x) = ax, where “x” is a variable and “a” is a constant
which is called the base of the function and it should be
greater than 0. The most commonly used exponential function
base is the transcendental number e, which is approximately
equal to 2.71828.
An exponential function is defined by the formula f(x) = ax,
where the input variable x occurs as an exponent. The
exponential curve depends on the exponential function and it
depends on the value of the x.
The exponential function is an important mathematical
function which is of the form
f(x) = ax
Where a>0 and a is not equal to 1.
x is any real number.
If the variable is negative, the function is undefined for -1 < x
< 1.
Here,
“x” is a variable
“a” is a constant, which is the base of the function.
An exponential curve grows, or decay depends on the
exponential function. Any quantity that grows or decays by a
fixed per cent at regular intervals should possess either
exponential growth or exponential decay.
Problem solving involving Exponential
Functions
a.) A certain bacteria, given favorable growth conditions,
grow continuously at a rate of 7.6% a day. Find the bacterial
population after 48 hours, if the initial population is 10,000
bacteria.
A=P0ert

A=population after a certain period.

P0= initial population P0= 10,000
r= rate of change r= 7.6% or 0.076
t= time t=48 hours|2 days
A= 10,000e(0.076)(2)
A= 21,579.25 ∴ there will be 21,579 bacteria after 48 hours .

b.) Reigheia is observing a population growth of a cell in the

environment. If the cell doubles its number per minute, then
how many cells are there after an hour?

f (t)=2t
t=time/ minute
f(t)= number of cells.

1 hour= 60 minutes
f (60)= 2 (60)
f (60)= 1.1529215046e18
f (60)= 1.15x1018

∴ after an hour , there will be 1.15 x 1018
