APPLICATION OF
SLOW SAND TECHNIQUE FOR

WATER FILTRATION
IN RAINWATER CATCHMENT FACILITY

1 INTRODUCTION

Rainwater is a crucial resource in the Philippines,

with an average rainfall of 143.04 millimeters annually.
It has various applications, including plant irrigation,
household chores, and drinking water. The slow
sand technique is a reliable method for removing
contaminants and suspended particles from rainwater,
making it suitable for hand washing and hygienic
purposes. This research aims to integrate the slow sand
technique into a filtration system for schools, addressing
the need for clean and safe water for hand washing and
hygienic purposes. This affordable and low-maintenance
approach could significantly improve water quality and
sanitation practices, contributing to overall health and
well-being.

5. Based on the analysis, what rainwater catchment that can be used in cleaning rooms, watering plants, and laundry. ‌
facility design would be suitable for BINHS?

> Slow sand filtration is effective in filtering rainwater because it assures

the safety of the filtered water and enhances the rainwater’s quality and
hygienic compliance. ‌

5 CONCLUSION
> Application of the slow sand technique poses notable challenges that
require specialized testing and regular operational checks to uphold its
effectiveness.

>
Based on the findings, it is concluded that students
actively engage in utilizing rainwater for various tasks Based on the collected data, the researchers proposed a rainwater
within the school premises. The integration of slow sand catchment facility design suitable for BINHS, incorporating a slow sand
filtration with rainwater collection and pre-treatment filtration system.
provides a sustainable solution for water purification.
Moreover, This approach effectively improves rainwater
quality by removing impurities and potential pathogens,
ensuring compliance with hygiene standards, and ensuring
the safety of the filtered water. Despite challenges such as
the need for specialized training and ongoing operational
checks, the slow sand technique proves effective in
ensuring water safety, minimizing environmental impact,
and controlling microbial growth, as recognized by the
students involved in the study.
