INTRODUCTION

This module is written in support of the K to 12 Basic Education Program to ensure

attainment of standards expected of you as a learner.
This aims to equip you with essential knowledge on the Angles Formed by Parallel
Lines Cut by a Transversal.
This includes the following activities/tasks:
 Expected Learning Outcome – This lays out the learning outcome that you are
expected to have accomplished at the end of the module.
 Pre-test – This determines your prior learning on the particular lesson you are about to
take.
 Discussion of the Lesson – This provides you with the application of the knowledge,
principles and attitude that will help you meet the expected learning outcome.
 Learning Activities – These provide you with the application of the knowledge and
principles you have gained from the lesson and enable you to further enhance your
skills as you carry out prescribed tasks.
 Post-test – This evaluates your overall understanding about the module.
With the different activities provided in this module, may you find this material engaging
and challenging as it develops your critical thinking skills.

Draw parallel lines g and h. Draw a transversal j so that it forms an 80o angle line with g
as shown. Also, draw a transversal k so that it forms a 50o angle with line h as shown.
Use your protractor to find the measures of the angles marked with letters.

Compare the measures of all the:

a) corresponding angles
b) alternate interior angles
c) alternate exterior angles.
What do you observe? ________________________

Complete the statements below:

When two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then
a) The corresponding angles are __________________.
b) The alternate interior angles are _______________.
c) The alternate exterior angles are _____________.

What Is It

Based on the previous activity, it is emphasized that when two parallel lines are cut by
a transversal, then

a) the corresponding angles are equal.

b) the alternate interior angles are equal.
c) the alternate exterior angles are equal.

Transversal line – is a line that intersects two or more coplanar lines at different
points.

Line n is a transversal line.

If parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then eight angles and pair of angles are formed.

In the figure, l ∥ m and line n is a transversal.

1 2
l
4 3

5 6
m
7 8

Interior angles are the four angles formed between the lines l and m.
In the figure these are ∠ 4 , ∠ 3 , ∠ 5 ,∧∠ 6.

Exterior angles are the four angles formed that lie outside the lines l and m.
These are:∠ 1 ,∠ 2, ∠ 7 ,∧∠ 8

Alternate interior angles are two interior angles that lie on opposite sides of a transversal.
The angle pairs ∠ 4∧∠ 6 ;∠ 5∧∠6 are alternate interior angles.

Alternate exterior angles are two exterior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal.
The angle pairs ∠ 1∧∠ 8; ∠ 2∧∠ 7 are alternate exterior angles.

Corresponding angles are two angles, one interior and the other exterior, on the same side of
the transversal.
The pairs of corresponding angles are ∠ 1∧∠5 ; ∠ 4∧∠7 ; ∠ 2∧∠ 6 ;
∠ 3∧∠ 8.

Example 2: z

1. If lines x and y are parallel and z is a transversal, what can you say about
a) any pair of angles that are boxed?
The pair of angles that are boxed are all congruent.
b) one boxed and one unboxed angle?
The one boxed and one unboxed angles are supplementary.

2. If ∠ B=(2 m−20)° and ∠C=(130−m)° , what is the value of m?

Solution:
∠ B=∠ C

(2 m−20)° =(130−m)°
2 m+ m=130+20
3 m=150
m=50 °
3. Using the same figure, if measure of ∠ A=6 y – 15 and measure∠ H=8 y−65,
a. What is y?
b. What is the measure of ∠C and ∠F?
Solution:
a. ∠ A and ∠ H is a pair of alternate exterior angle.
∠ A=∠ H
To find y , substitute the measure of ∠ A which 6 y – 15 and the measure
of ∠ H which is 8 y – 65 .
6 y – 15=8 y – 65
6 y−8 y=−65+15
−2 y=−50
−50
y=
−2
y=25
∠ A=6 ( 25 ) – 15 ∠ H=8 (25)−65
¿ 135 °=135 °
b. ∠C is supplementary to ∠A, therefore ∠ C=45 °
∠F is congruent to ∠C, therefore∠ F=45 °

What’s More
Directions: Determine the measures of the angles marked with letters. Lines with arrowheads
are parallel. (Note: Figures are not drawn to scale.)

I learned that:
 transversal is a line that intersects two or more lines at different points.
 if two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then any pair of alternate
interior angles are congruent, any pair of alternate exterior angles are
congruent, and the corresponding angles are also congruent.
 if two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the interior angles on the
same side of a transversal are supplementary, and the exterior angles on
the same side of transversal are also supplementary.
