Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

Relationships between pairs of angles formed by parallel lines cut by a
transversal exist. These relationships or properties are as follows:

a) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form congruent alternate
interior angles.

b) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form congruent alternate
exterior angles.

c) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form congruent corresponding
angles.

d) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form supplementary angles on
the same side of the transversal.
Same-side interior or consecutive interior angles are supplementary
angles (sum of the consecutive interior angles is 180⁰):

Same-side exterior angles are supplementary angles (sum of the

consecutive exterior angles is 180⁰):

e) If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, and the transversal is perpendicular
to one line, then the transversal is also perpendicular to the other line.
Example: Given the diagram, (Sir Ian pakidrawing po yung tamang drawing dito
salamat)

B A
D C

F E
H G
a) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form congruent alternate
interior angles.
∠D and ∠E are alternate interior angles, therefore ∠D ≅∠E.
∠C and ∠F are alternate interior angles, therefore ∠C ≅∠F.

b) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form congruent alternate
exterior angles.
∠B and ∠G are alternate exterior angles, therefore ∠B ≅∠G.
∠A and ∠H are alternate exterior angles, therefore ∠A ≅∠H.

c) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form congruent corresponding
angles.
∠B and ∠F are corresponding angles, therefore ∠B ≅∠F.
∠D and ∠H are corresponding angles, therefore ∠D ≅∠H.
∠A and ∠E are corresponding angles, therefore ∠A ≅∠E.
∠C and ∠G are corresponding angles, therefore ∠C ≅∠G.

d) Two parallel lines that are cut by a transversal form supplementary angles on
the same side of the transversal.
Same-side interior or consecutive interior angles:
∠D and ∠F are same-side interior or consecutive interior angles are
supplementary angles, therefore m∠D + m∠F = 180o.
∠C and ∠E are same-side interior or consecutive interior angles are
supplementary angles, therefore m∠C + m∠E = 180o.
Same-side exterior angles are supplementary angles:
∠B and ∠H are same-side exterior angles are supplementary angles, therefore
m∠B + m∠H = 180o.
∠A and ∠G are same-side exterior angles are supplementary angles, therefore
m∠A + m∠G = 180o.

Activity 2: Find My X
Direction: Refer to the diagram in answering the following questions.

1. Name all the angles that would be congruent to ∠C if and only if lines e and f
are parallel.
2. Assume lines l and m are parallel, and lines e and f are parallel. List all the
angles that would be congruent to ∠K.

Directions: In the figure, l || m and e || f. Identify the relationship that exist

between each pair of angles below and tell if they are congruent or
supplementary.
