What is 2D Animation?
When drawings are given the illusion of movement so that
they can educate and entertain us, the process to bring
this about is known as 2D, i.e. two-dimensional (length x
width), animation.

Cartoons are a classic example of what 2D animation is.

Back in pre-computing times, animations were created

through repetitive drawing on cel acetates so that the
characters could be seen to carry out different actions
and expressions.

Now, of course, thanks to computers and various

animations software available, creating 2D animation is
much less laborious and therefore less time-consuming.

Did you know that the first 2D animation

to be released for public viewing goes
way back to the year 1906?

The animation was called “Humorous

Phases of Funny Faces” and was made
by James Stuart Blackton.

What is the difference between 2D and 3D

Animation?
The difference lies in the geometry and also in the name.
While a two-dimensional animation is based on hand-
drawn flat characters, shapes and objects, a three-
dimensional animation is all this but with an additional
dimension – height.

Take a look at this figure:

While 2D animation has been used to make cartoons- e.g.

Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Popeye, etc- 3D animation
is used to make animated shows, e.g. Mickey Mouse
Clubhouse, Garfield, Pink Panther, etc.

How can Businesses benefit from 2D

Animation?
Animation is itself a powerfully communicative medium
through which complex messages can be conveyed to
both niche and mass audiences in clear and concise
ways.

This is why more and more businesses are using 2D

animation as a way of marketing and advertising their
products, services and brands.

From cereal brands, to tea, to energy drinks, to even

feminine hygiene products, 2D animation has successfully
marketed these brands to audiences for many, many
years.

Research has shown that an engaging 2D animation can

significantly increase online conversion rates.

It can positively influence viewers to make that all-

important purchasing decision quicker.

Even if your conversion goal is not sales-oriented, for

instance, you may want your viewers to fill out a contact
form so that you can keep the data on your records for
future email marketing campaigns.

Your 2D animation could demonstrate, update or remind

your audience about a forthcoming product or service
launch.

The success rate of all these goals can be enhanced with

the help of a 2D animation which is why it is beneficial for
businesses in these fiercely-competitive times.
