GRADE-4 SCIENCE
Chapter-7
STATES OF MATTER

Instruction:
Take a fresh page and copy the following notes neatly by leaving
lines in between. Complete it on or before 27/11/2020
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Identify three states of matter.
Differentiate between the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Learn about the conversion of one state to another.

NEW WORDS:
1. Matter
2. Solids
3. Liquids
4. Gases
5. Evaporation
6. Condensation
7. Melting
8. Freezing

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:

1. Define
(a) Matter – Anything that has weight and occupies space.
(b) Melting – The process where a solid changes into liquid on
heating
is called melting.
(c) Evaporation – The change of a liquid into vapour on heating is
called
evaporation.
(d) Condensation – The change of vapour into a liquid on cooling is
called condensation.
(e) Freezing – The change of liquid into solid on cooling is called
freezing.

2. Write two properties of solids, liquids and gases. Give two
examples
for each.
Ans: Solids
Solids have a definite shape ,size and volume
Solids are hard
Example – wood, stone
Liquids
Liquids do not have a definite shape.
Liquids have definite volume. They take the shape of the
container in which they are kept or poured in to. Example – Milk,
water
Gases
Gases do not have a fixed shape, size or volume.
Gases move freely from one place to another.
Example – Air, lighted incense stick (Agarbatti)

3. Name three gases present in the air.

Ans: Oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

4. Liquids can flow. Give reason.

Ans: Liquids can flow because the molecules in liquid are loosely
packed.

5. Draw and colour two solids and two liquids and name them.

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION:

1. Rama’s mother came back home from shopping. As she entered
the house, she immediately ran into the kitchen and switched off
the gas stove’s knob. How did she know that the gas was leaking?
