Ignorance is Misery: An Infomercial about RA 8504, RA

9211, and RA 9165
Have you ever treated class about sexual education lightheartedly?

Or doubt the severity of tobacco and addiction?

It is not our fault for being ignorant towards these matters. Maybe there simply is no
reliable source for us, the youth, to learn from.

However, to remain ignorant is miserable. And that is why we must learn.

Being uneducated about safe sex can lead to engaging in unsafe sexual intercourse
underage and can lead to sexually transmitted diseases.

Republic Act no. 8504 also known as the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act is a
law that aims to prevent and control the spread of AIDS in the Philippines.

“Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)” – a condition characterized by a

combination of signs and symptoms, caused by HIV contracted from another person and
which attacks and weakens the body’s immune system, making the afflicted individual
susceptible to other life-threatening infections.

The law mandates the government to promote public awareness about the causes, modes of
transmission, consequences, means of prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. It also
prohibits discrimination against individuals with HIV/AIDS and offers basic health
services and full protection of their human rights.

How does this concern the youth?

According to the Department of Health, of the total number of Filipinos living with HIV,
80 percent are aged 15 to 34, and 81% percent of transmissions in 2010-2017 were
contracted through male-to-male sex (MSMs).
Studies also showed that only 37 percent of youth MSMs knew how HIV was transmitted
and could be prevented.

Hence why you should always listen attentively to the discussions in our school
curriculum, for it is the best way to get information for our age. And with that, we can be
aware of how it is transmitted.
and that is the goal of this republic act, to prevent and control the spread of AIDS/HIV.

Did you know that cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ in your body? Not just the
lungs.

All the risks you see in those cigarette packs are all true.

The Republic Act No. 9211 , also known as the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 , is a law
in the Philippines that regulates the packaging, use, sale, distribution, and advertisements
of tobacco products

What is the purpose of this republic act?

- It aims to protect Filipinos from hazardous products and promote health consciousness.
- It regulates and bans all tobacco advertisements and sponsorships
- Prohibits the sale of tobacco product within 100 meters of schools, playgrounds, and
other facilities frequented by minors.

So despite this, why is smoking still widespread amongst the youth?

- According to the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 12.5% of students smoke, ranging from
ages 13-15. It was stated that 77.1% of students bought their cigarettes from stores, shops,
kiosks, and street vendors without being refused service, and only 37.1% of those were
prevented due to their age.

Alongside the easy access, according to the American Lung Association, here are a few
reasons why teens initiate smoking.
- Their parents are smokers.
- Peer pressure—their friends encourage them to try cigarettes and to keep smoking.
- They see smoking as a way of rebelling and showing independence.
- They think that everyone else is smoking and that they should, too.

Unsurprisingly, smoking has been linked to different diseases like stroke, diabetes,
emphysema, chronic bronchitis, heart disease, and lung diseases, among others. As
a result, it has been estimated that smokers die 10 years earlier compared to non-
smokers
To sum it all up, Republic Act no. 9211 regulates the tobacco use of the populace and
protects them from hazardous products, and to eradicate the initiation of smoking
especially in minors, by promoting health consciousness.

With the wrong influence, we can all be roped into bad things, and one of them is illegal
drug usage.
Republic Act no. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive dangerous drugs act of 2002,
aims to control and regulate illegal drugs, and to prevent and suppress the trade and usage
of it.
If you do any of the unlawful acts stated in this law, you can be imprisoned for 12 years
up to a life sentence to death and a fine of P100,000-P15,000,000.
What are the unlawful acts one can be charged for?

One can be charged for:

- Sale, Trading, Administration, Dispensation, Delivery, Distribution and Transportation
of Dangerous Drugs
- Possession of Dangerous Drugs
- Possession of Equipment, Instrument, Apparatus and Other Paraphernalia for Dangerous
Drugs
- Possession of Dangerous Drugs During Parties, Social Gatherings or Meetings.
- Use of Dangerous Drugs

Why do the youth initiate drug usage?

Teens may use drugs because of:
-peer influence
-environment
-popular media
-escape
-self-medication
-boredom
-curiosity
-rebellion
-misinformation

However, this Republic Act does not simply ban illegal drugs; it also provides
rehabilitation for former drug users, recognizing drug addiction as a serious medical
condition, and has multiple rehabilitation centers for the youth.
And to sum it up, Republic Act no. 9165 prevents and suppresses illegal drug trafficking
and usage, provide rehabilitation, and to safeguard citizenry (particularly the youth) from
the harmful effects of illegal drugs.

To conclude,
Republic Act no. 8504 aims to prevent and control the spread of AIDS and make health
services for it more accessible, whilst protecting the human rights of those with AIDS.

Republic Act no. 9211 aims to regulate the packaging, use, sale, distribution, and
advertisements of tobacco products; and to eradicate the initiation of smoking by
promoting health consciousness

Republic Act no. 9165 aims to protect the citizenry from the harmful effects of illegal
drugs by controlling and regulating the illegal drug trade and usage, whilst providing
rehabilitation for those who are former users of drugs.

These Republic acts tackle many things that we, the youth, can engage in despite it being
forbidden.

Now, only you who watched this infomercial can tell me, is ignorance truly bliss?
