dialect term altogether.
Instead, many choose to call
the different forms of speech
“variants”. In this way,
languages are seen as groups
of variables. So the English
language is made up of
variables including Standard
British and American
English, VATA, Nigerian
English, Malay English and
many others. Each has its
own unique history and
characteristic pronunciation,
vocabulary, and grammatical
structures.

to better understand the
dialect, linguistics calls the
different ways in which it can
be spoken "variants". With
this, it is achieved that the
languages are seen as a
group of different variables.
In such a way, the English
language is made up of

English, VATA, Nigerian
English, Malay English and
many others. Each of these
types of English has a unique
history and its characteristic
pronunciation, as well as its
vocabulary and grammatical
form.
Well, when is it considered
that a way of speaking is a
 Germany and Interlaken,

regional dialects of the
German language. And yet,
when someone from Bremen
is visiting the Swiss Alps, the
conversations they hear
between locals will likely be
incomprehensible to them.
Similarly, outside of China,
Mandarin and Cantonese are

more dissimilar than Spanish
and Italian.

European nation states
beginning around the 1500s.
In order to establish and
maintain centralized
governments, clear territorial
boundaries, and state-
sponsored education systems,
many nation states promoted
a standardized language.
Which form of speech was
chosen to be the standard
language was usually based
on what people spoke in the
capital. And while other
forms of speech persisted,
they were often treated as
inferior. This tradition
extended across the globe
with European colonization
and into modern times.

seems logical that the degree
of mutual comprehensibility
defines whether both ways of
speaking are classified as
independent languages or as
dialects of the same
language. however, as we
have seen, there are many
circumstances in which this is
not so. Perhaps impressively,
the difference between a
language and a dialect is
usually unrelated to
pronunciation, vocabulary, or
any other linguistic
idiosyncrasy. but it's not a
coincidence either. It is a
matter of politics.
It was the rise of nation-states
in Europe in the 16th century
that laid the foundation for
what can officially be called
language. Many countries
promoted standard languages
to create and maintain
centralized governments,
landlocked territories, and
government-funded education
systems. The dialect chosen
as the default language is
usually based on the
language of the people in the
capital. Other ways of
speaking still exist, but they
are often considered inferior.
This tradition spread
throughout the world with the
colonization of Europe to this
day.
