Research Article: The Many Faces of Leadership

Authors’ last names (year) explored _ Charlotte Danielson, 2007

The participants were/the setting was: Teachers in the classroom. The findings were that teachers stay
in positions for many years and become the “custodians of school culture”, while administrators tend
to leave after a few years and lack that experience and knowledge. Although principals are meant to be
the visionaries of the school, with all their responsibilities, this can get lost. Teachers should have more
of a visionary role within the school environment. There are different ways that teachers act as leaders
in the school, but it is not necessarily promoted by the school itself. Teachers must take the initiative to
act as a leader within a school to improve the school and move changes beyond the school. Many
times, teachers have more experiences than admin with the school environment and there is a real
need for teachers to step up and show leadership throughout.

The authors suggested that teacher leadership is necessary in schools as teaching is a “flat profession”.
Where in many careers, there will be room to grow and take on more responsibilities, teaching is
dissimilar. Many teachers that have been teaching for many years have the same responsibilities and
leadership as that of a brand-new teacher. It is suggested that with this information that teachers
should be taking on leadership roles of their own, whether it is initiated or provided by the schools.

This literature is related to CSTP-6.2 Establishing professional goals and engaging in continuous and
purposeful professional growth and development in that it reminds teachers of the importance of
continuing growth and showing teacher leadership throughout a school. Although the role of a teacher
does not explicitly state becoming a leader within the school, this is something necessary for students,
teachers, and the school to succeed.

As a teacher leader, this article reminds me that I should not take a back seat at my school and push
myself to be a leader. I need to remember that my experiences as a teacher can benefit my school, my
students, and my fellow teachers.

The findings were that teacher leadership is needed in the school environment to spread and
strengthen school reform and improvement. There are various ways in which can foster the growth of
teacher leaders in the school environment.

The authors suggested that there are various ways in which teacher leaders can be promoted and it is
necessary to have these elements. The necessary elements being that school culture and context
allows for teaching professionals to be valued, appreciated, and encouraged to take initiative. It is also
necessary to have colleague recognition and respect, trusting environment, and positive relationships.
Last, it is important to provide teaches with access to materials, time, and space to act as leaders.

This literature is related to CSTP-6.3 Collaborating with colleagues and the broader professional
community to support teacher and student learning in that it shows how important it is to have the
support of colleagues and the school to flourish as a teacher leader.

As a teacher leader, this article reminds me that I should promote colleague positivity and seek out
opportunities to show leadership to improve the overall environment of the school. There are things
that I can do as a teacher leader to promote other teacher leaders to emerge. I can show others
support and guidance so that they feel comfortable showing leadership as well.
