Introduction:

As we may know, we humans don’t last forever. Functions and cells in our body decline

over time. The real question is why do people age? Yes, we all age, but there can be some

variables that can change the way we age. It can be both by natural and genetic causes.

Personally, I didn’t know our surroundings affected us in aging. Well, maybe about the genetic

causes like some people age quicker or slower than others. However, there are other reasons

behind the aging of each person.

What is aging?

Aging is all the physical and mental

changes in our body. We change mentally

since people have the ability of change the

way they act or feel throughout time.

Changing physically can be changes on the

skin like wrinkles and health problems such as diabetes (some people don’t necessarily have to

be old to have this disease, but it is more common on elderly people).

Types of aging

Cellular aging: It consists of the biological aging of cells. Cells are known to multiply

and divide to perform biological functions. The more cells divide, the older they get. The

consequences of this are that cells lose their ability to perform functions properly. This makes

cells less healthy.

Environmental/ Damage aging: This type of aging is caused by the environment we are

on and the type of lifestyle we have. The consume of certain things like alcohol or smoke, can

increase the aging of a person. Been exposed to ultraviolet radiation can affect as well.
What is the Redox theory of aging?

It explains that a redox interface connects an organism and its environment. Genetically

encoded exposure memory systems evolved along with multicellularity in an O2-rich

environment. Exposure memory allows an individual to adapt to resources and threats during

lifespan. Aging is an irreversible decline in adaptability due to execution of exposure memory

systems. Age-associated changes in redox network structures occur with many disease processes,

including Type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, atrial fibrillation, and other

proinflammatory or profibrotic diseases.

Biochemical theory of aging:

AGEs develop when fats or proteins are exposed to sugar. High levels can speed up aging

since it leads to oxidate stress. Heat shock proteins protect cells from stress, but their response

decrease as we age. Also, normal chemical reactions damage DNA, proteins, and metabolites

over time.

How can we slow the effects of aging?

There are different ways of slowing the process which are:

- Have a nutritious diet and consume less

processed foods.

- Have exercise to reduce the physical and mental

effects of aging.

- Go to checkups to prevent diseases.

- Drink alcohol in moderation.

- Avoid consuming tobacco

Conclusion:

During this investigation, I learned that people age different because of different factors.

The environment we live influences a lot as well as our lifestyle. The consume of certain things

such as alcohol increases the risk of having a chronic disease. Also, I learned about the Redox

theory of aging in which it plays an important role in maintaining cellular functions like

metabolic cycles. This theory explains the relationship between an organism and its environment.

There is a biochemical theory of aging, in which are reactions that occur naturally. There are

different ways to slow the time of aging like having a healthy food routine, doing exercise, avoid

the consume of alcohol, etc.
