1.0 INTRODUCTION
It is proposed to construct a new Mosque at a site off Oaks Lane in Newbury Park, Ilford.
The proposed development will comprise the construction of the main Mosque building which will
include a single story basement underneath. Associated with the Mosque development, the site
will be landscaped and dedicated car parking areas will be provided off the Oaks Lane access.
The proposed development is located at the former Salvation Army site situated off Oaks Lane in
Newbury Park, Ilford. The shape of the site is essentially a long, thin rectangle orientated north-
east, south-west with the proposed Mosque positioned in the centre of the site. To the north is the
proposed car parking area whilst to the south, areas of general landscaping are proposed.
Currently the site is overgrown with all above ground structures demolished.
Construction of the new mosque and associated single level basement will require the installation
of a contiguous bored pile retaining wall around the perimeter of the development area to retain
the sides during excavation and construction works. Internal support piles will also be required to
support the basement slab and columns transferring loads from the superstructure above. Line
loads will also be applied to the top of the retaining wall from the above ground superstructure
Information from the ground investigation report indicates that the site is relatively flat and level
with a ground surface level at 50.00m AOD, approximately the same level as the proposed
ground floor slab of the new mosque.
The position of the new basement, the retaining wall required and internal foundation piles are
shown on the site plan, presented on Figure 1. This also shows the section taken for the design
of the contiguous bored pile retaining wall.
These calculations cover the design of the required temporary / permanent contiguous bored pile
retaining wall together with the capacity calculations for the internal foundation support piles.
The calculations have been carried out by Piledesigns Limited on behalf of Geobond Limited.

Details of the proposed retaining walls and foundation piles have been taken from the drawings
provided, which are from Sayeed Ali, Chartered Structural Engineer for the project under the
project reference number 11193.
The main drawings that have been consulted in preparing these calculations can be
summarised as follows;
• 11196 / 101 Rev B – Foundation, Basement Floor & Ground Floor Plans
• 11193 / 103 Rev B - Typical Sections
All relevant drawings relating to the piling works are marked as ‘For Pricing Only’ and
Construction Issue drawings must be issued before piling works commence on site.
The following Piling Platform Levels (PPL’s) will be provided by the Main Contractor;
One wall section has been identified for this analysis, labelled A, and has been indicated on the
location plan for the retaining wall, Figure 1. The section has been chosen to represent the
general soil and structural criteria which is applicable to the requirements of the retaining wall.
Section A
The retaining wall extends around the perimeter of the basement in a generally open area with
no houses or significant structures adjacent or nearby. Therefore, one section is considered
appropriate for the design of the retaining wall.
Within the design an allowance of 10kN/m² has been allowed as a general ground level
surcharge to cater for the presence of plant and machinery during the temporary construction
phase and for later car parking / deliveries etc., during the permanent in used phase. For the
temporary phase during construction, it has been assumed that safety barriers will be installed
around the open excavation such that the surcharge loading does not encroach closer than
1.0m from the edge of the retaining wall. In the permanent condition the surcharge has been
extended to the back edge of the retaining wall.
GEOBOND Ltd. Page: 7
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
It has also been assumed that as a matter of good practice the capping beam to the piles will be
cast and cured before the bulk of the basement is excavated.
GEOBOND Ltd. Page: 8
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
Ground conditions have been taken from a “site investigation” carried out by Herts and Essex Site
Investigations reference No CSG/10518, dated 23rd November 2011. The information contains
the records of seven driven in ‘windowless sample’ boreholes taken to a maximum depth of 5.0m
from existing ground level.
Within the borehole regular disturbed bulk bag samples were obtained with two ‘Undisturbed’
samples taken in the more cohesive deposits. Laboratory testing of the ‘undisturbed’ samples
indicated that they had been significantly affected during the sampling with the results not
considered to be realistic.
Ground level for the boreholes has been assumed to be 50.00m AOD.
The borehole showed the ground conditions to comprise a general covering of Made Ground
overlying sandy gravel with occasional clay lenses typical of the Boyn Hill Gravel Deposits.
Beneath the Gravel deposits, London Clay was encountered and proved to the full depth of the
borehole where encountered.

6 50.00 48.60 48.00
7 50.00 48.60 48.00
Groundwater was encountered as definite strike within the Boyn Hill Gravel Deposits in 3 of the 7
boreholes drilled. In all cases the groundwater was struck at 3.00m depth (approx. 47.00m AOD)
with fast inflows recorded. Standing water levels recorded after a period of 5 minutes varied from
2.60m to 2.50m depth (approx. 47.40 to 47.50m AOD)
Due to the non - consistent encounters of groundwater within the gravel deposits across the site it
is suspected that a perched groundwater table exists within the gravel deposits overlying the
more impermeable London Clay. Although groundwater was encountered above the excavation
level of the proposed basement, the design proposed by the Structural Engineer does not seem
GEOBOND Ltd. Page: 9
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
to have allowed for any specific groundwater protection measures. Therefore, for the purposes of
designing the contiguous bored pile retaining wall a groundwater level of 45.60m AOD (typically
the underside of the pile caps) has been assumed for design purposes.
The site investigation information provided is insufficient to enable a full design to be undertaken
due to the limited depth of the investigation window borehole and the lack of sufficient in-situ and
laboratory testing on recovered samples. It has therefore been necessary to refer to adjacent
ground investigations where present and historical information regarding the geotechnical
properties of the ground conditions encountered.

The pile design calculations have been based on the information provided. The soil parameters
employed have generally been taken from the information provided, but also supplemented
where necessary from published data and other ground investigation reports in the area. The
analysis has considered un-drained conditions for the cohesive deposits and drained conditions
for the granular deposits when applied to the temporary condition. For the permanent condition,
all soil types have been changed to the drained condition where applicable.
Table 2 presents a summary of the geotechnical design parameters for each soil used in the
design of the retaining wall and foundation piles. For each soil the SLS and ULS, drained and
un-drained conditions have been indicated. Further details on how these design parameters are
obtained are given in Section 4.1 of this report.
The sections presented on Figures 3 and 4 presents the typical soil profile used in the analysis.
Groundwater for all the cases considered has been taken at an elevation of 45.60m AOD.

The construction sequence adopted for the retaining wall has been assumed to be as follows
The above construction sequence must be followed exactly as any deviation could result in piles
becoming overstressed.
The contiguous bored pile retaining wall piles will be constructed using a C35 designed concrete
pump mix and ‘B’ (500N/mm²) grade main reinforcement bars with ‘B’ grade helical shear links.
A minimum of 50 mm cover to the main reinforcement will be provided by propriety spacers.
The main structural design parameters used in the retaining wall analysis have been
summarized in Table 3,
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
The retaining wall has been designed as a free cantilever in the temporary condition with
permanent propping consisting of the structural basement and ground floor slabs of the proposed
building.
Table 4 presents the structural and geometrical properties of the propping that has been used in
the design of the retaining wall.
Should the construction sequence or propping system be changed from that assumed then the
retaining wall design will need to be reassessed which could result in changes to the pile length
and / or reinforcement.

4.1 Geotechnical Analysis for the Secant Bored Pile Retaining Wall
The stability analysis has been carried out using the computer program ‘WALLAP’ Version 6.05,
developed by Geosolve.
The input and output data from the analyses are presented in Appendix A. Two sets of WALLAP
runs were carried out for each wall section considered, namely one for ULS (Ultimate Limit State)
conditions to check overall wall stability for the embedment length given with the other analysis
for SLS (Serviceability Limit State) conditions to calculate the induced bending moments and
shear forces.
The ULS calculations have been based on the 'Strength Factor' method, with factor M' set to 1.5
for un-drained parameters and 1.2 for drained parameters. These are in accordance with British
Standard, BS8002 (1994) and CIRIA report reference C580 (2003). This first analysis is mainly
to verify that the proposed embedment length, i.e. reinforced toe level, provides a nominal factor
of safety against failure. Bending and shear forces are un-factored in any subsequent structural
calculations. An allowance for over dig within the excavation of 10% (0.5m maximum) of the
retained height (or below a temporary prop where employed) has also been taken into account.
The SLS calculations have assumed moderately conservative soil parameters using a 'Strength
factor' of 1.0 and no allowance for possible over dig. This second calculation is to determine the
factored bending and shear forces for any subsequent structural calculations and to determine
the anticipated wall deflections.
Reinforcement calculations are based on the worst case bending moments and shear values
determined from the factored ULS and un-factored SLS calculations as indicated in Table 5 and
summarized in the wall reinforcement schedule, Table 6. Temporary and permanent prop forces
have been summarized in Table 7.
Details of the soil input values used in the analyses and output results are presented within the
WALLAP printouts, Appendix A.
(a) Geotechnical parameters, pile stiffness and surcharges are considered to be reasonably
conservative values. A more accurate assessment of wall displacements would require
the input of 'actual' parameters to be obtained from more sophisticated laboratory testing.
(b) The computer program does not consider the beneficial effects of structural elements such
as a capping beam in this instance.
GEOBOND Ltd. Page: 18
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
(c) The computer program is a two-dimensional analysis program and does not consider the
beneficial effects of geometrical features such as internal or external wall corners which
increase its overall stiffness.
(d) The computer program uses a Winkler spring analysis to determine the wall
displacements, in which springs are used to represent a continuum and there is no
transfer of shear stresses between springs. In general, the application of this concept
leads to an overestimation of structural deformations; hence the resulting displacements
may be over-predicted.
Reinforcement requirements have been analysed for the sheer forces and bending moments
indicated within the WALLAP outputs (Appendix A) and summarized in the wall schedule, (Table
4). The Oasys software program ‘ADCOL’ has been employed for this purpose and all bending
moments and shear force calculations have been carried out in accordance with BS 8110.
Helical shear reinforcement details have been calculated from an in house designed spread
sheet which calculates the shear reinforcement in accordance with BS 8110.
The results of the ‘ADCOL’ analyses together with the helical reinforcement spread sheet results
are given in Appendix B. For all cases the concrete grade has been taken as C35 and a worst
case axial load of 0kN considered.

Calculations for vertical pile capacities have been carried out using the CADS software program
‘Pile’ version 1.09 using bored piles employing 350mm diameter piles
The axial pile design has been based on the following soil profile based on a piling platform level
of 50.00m AOD
For piles designed in cohesive deposits an un drained approach is accepted as being the most
appropriate when calculating the ultimate shaft and end bearing values. Groundwater is not
considered within the calculations. However, for granular deposits a drained approach is
accepted as being the most appropriate when calculating the ultimate shaft and end bearing
values. Groundwater, when applicable, is considered in the calculations.
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
End Bearing
Factors of Safety
A global factor of safety of 3.0 has been employed when determining the allowable axial working
load of the internal bearing piles. For the retaining wall piles a global factor of safety of 3.0 has
been adopted (Refer to Section 4.6 for additional details).
Calculations for the vertical pile capacity using the bearing pile software ‘PILE’ are presented in
Appendix C.
The indicated internal pile load for the internal bearing piles has been given as 350kN (for
pricing purposes). From the calculations presented in Appendix C the required pile toe level is
35.50m AOD or a pile length of (50.00 – 35.50) = 14.50m.
GEOBOND Ltd. Page: 24
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
There is no requirement for the internal bearing piles to resist any tension loadings
There is no requirement for the internal bearing piles to resist any lateral loadings
The retaining wall piles are required to carry axial point loads and line loads from the building
above. The maximum line load has been given as being 180kN/m run which for a pile spacing of
0.45m gives a load per pile of 81kN per pile.
For contiguous piles in a retaining wall that are required to carry an axial load, a reduction factor
is usually applied to the calculated working capacity to take into account the close centres of the
piles. In the retaining wall required at this site two 350mm diameter piles will be installed at
450mm centres.,
For 350mm diameter piles installed at 450mm centres consider the surface area per metre depth
to be 0.90m², i.e. the wall is considered to be straight sided (2 x 0.45m pile spacing). Relating this
to the surface area of an isolated 350mm diameter pile (1.099m² per m depth), the reduction
factor in surface area is determined to be 0.82. No reduction factor is required for the end bearing
since the surface area of a rectangular area of (0.35 x 0.45) is 0.157m² which is greater than the
base surface area of an isolated 350mm diameter pile (0.096m²).
To calculate the allowable working load of an individual retaining wall pile, the pile design
calculation for the bearing piles with a cut off level of 45.40m AOD has been employed (the same
calculation as used for the internal bearing piles). The ultimate figures calculated by the software
have then been input into a spread sheet to produce factored allowable working capacities. For
all the wall piles a global factor of safety of 3.0 has been adopted.
Table 8 presents the allowable working loads for retaining wall piles of 350mm diameter. From
Table 8 it can be seen that the required minimum pile toe level of 42.00m AOD provides an
adjusted axial pile capacity of 110 kN per pile with is sufficient for the maximum indicated
retaining wall pile load of 81kN per pile.

Notes:
Minimum pile length for retaining wall function = 8.00m, toe level = 42.00m AOD
For a toe level of 42.00m AOD the axial capacity of a retaining wall pile is 110kN
For a line load of 180kN/m run = (180 x 0.45) = 81kN per pile. Therefore min pile length OK
For a line load of 75kN/m run = (75 x 0.45) = 34kN per pile. Therefore min pile length OK
GEOBOND Ltd. Page: 26
Project: Newbury Park Mosque, Oaks Lane, ILFORD. IG2 7PL Date: 27/11/2013
The indicated pile loads for the internal bearing piles has been given as 350kN (for pricing
purposes only) and are not expected to significantly change in the final design. From the
calculations presented in Appendix C, the required pile toe level is 35.50m AOD or a pile length
of 14.50m when measured from the Piling Platform Level of 50.00m AOD. Reinforcement to the
piles will comprise 4 No B20mm bars extending 8.0m below ground level to an elevation of
42.0m AOD or 3.40m below pile cut off level. Shear reinforcement will be B 8 helical bent to a
pitch of 175mm. The internal piles are essentially tied together by the pile caps so only nominal
reinforcement is required to structurally connect the piles into the pile cap.
The retaining wall piles will be constructed to a toe level of 42.00m AOD from a piling platform
level of 50.00m AOD, a pile length of 8.0m. Reinforcement will comprise 4 No B 20mm bars
extending the full length of the piles or 8.0m. Shear reinforcement will be B 8 helical bent to a
pitch of 175mm. The required pile length for stability considerations provides sufficient axial load
capacity to resist the indicated line loads to be supported by the wall.
5.3 Summary
Summary result of the retaining wall stability analysis is presented in Table 5. The pile summary
schedule indicating required pile lengths and reinforcement is presented in Table 6 whilst
temporary and permanent prop forces are presented in Table 7. Table 8 presents the allowable
axial loads that can be resisted by the retaining wall.
The detailed retaining wall analysis comprising the computer print outs from ‘WALLAP’ are
presented in Appendix A.
Reinforcement calculations comprising the computer printouts from the ‘ADCOL’ design
software and in-house designed link reinforcement spread sheet are presented in Appendix B.
Axial capacity calculations comprising the computer printouts from the ‘PILE’ design software
are presented in Appendix C
