Question # 1
What role do spiritual gifts play in the life of the Church.
Spiritual gifts according to the bible are special divine empowerment bestowed on each
believer to be used within the context of the body of the church to accomplish His given
ministry according to His grace and discernment (1 Corinthians 12). These gifts from God are
for the equipping and empowering of believers and followers of Christ so that they can
participate in the building of the body of Christ. The main purpose of spiritual gifts in essence is
for the edification and growth of the church.
Spiritual gifts can be classified as the discerning gift which is the gift of being able to see the
truths which are not obvious. There is also the declarative gift which is the gift of being able to
prophecy, speak in tongues and interpret what was said. The dynamic gifts which is the gift of
faith, the gift of healing and the gift of being able to work miracles. These are the tools God
uses to build up the Church. (Ephesians 4:11-13) God gave some apostles and some prophets
and some evangelist, these were for the perfecting of saints, for the work of the ministry and
for the edifying of the body of Christ.

Question # 2
Consider the phrase “Within the team there are different roles and functions and each of you
has a responsibility” and explain accountability by stating what it means and why it is
important.

Accountability is being accountable, it’s setting and holding persons to a common expectation.
It is a willingness to accept responsibility for ones actions. It also means the acceptance of
responsibility for honest and ethical conduct towards others. Our duty as part of a team is to be
1

responsible, take ownership of actions taken and be accountable, doing so will mean we

consider ourselves as part of the team.

We all are given different responsibilities for which we are accountable. Accountability here, is
seen as understanding and upholding the responsibility you have been given or volunteered to
take on in order that whatever task you were assigned will be completed to the best of your
ability.
Paul described Church Members as members of one body, the body of Christ, responsible for
and accountable to each other. (1 Corinthians 12:12-28) Therefore each member must do their
part by using the spiritual gifts bestowed on them to edify the body of Christ.
When we are accountable, trust is developed, confidence is inspired and you will have the
support especially when introducing new ideas. Accountability is essential for the healthy
growth and development of the church.

Question # 3
If I were the leader of the team, I would use the democratic leadership style as well as the
transformational leadership style. In the democratic leadership style others are involved in the
decision making with the leader having the final say even though the delegation of authority
can be passed on to others. What I found most interesting about this kind of leadership is that
the communication is active in that it goes both upward and downward. So regardless of your
academic qualifications or lack thereof you can actively participate in the process. The
democratic leadership style is the most preferred style as it promotes fairness, encourage
participation by members and the leader guides and facilitates.
The transformational leadership style would also be appropriate in that it would initiated the
changes needed to determine the direction the church should go. The decisions taken would
result in more committed and satisfied followers as the transformational leader empowers and
motivate his followers.
In the essence of time the autocratic leadership style would have been the ideal leadership
style but not the most effective as the leader who considers himself most knowledgeable would
not involve others in the decision making process which would result in dissent and a further
drift in membership.

Leadership is the ability of individuals to influence and guide followers. It involves making sound
decisions with clear vision and achievable goals. Leadership also provide its followers with the
knowledge and tools necessary to achieve those goals.
An effective leader possess the following characteristics: self-confidence, strong communication
and managerial skills, perseverance in the face of failure, willingness to take risk openness to
change and level headedness.
Five leadership principles that I think would be effective in this situation are:
- Leading by example. A good leader models excellent behaviour and must motivate and
encourage his followers.
- Leadership is about people, interpersonal and communication skills are essential. As a
leader you will have challenges if you are unable to communicate your vision. You
should have a good relationship with the members regardless of their status in life.
- Focus on change, transformation should be at the front of every leadership plan. One
the members are aware of the goals and objectives and their role in the transformation
they will be willing to work as a team.
- Promote diversity, when everyone has the same background and expertise it means
there is a limited field of expertise but when there is a diverse range you will have fresh
perspective. A diverse team encourages innovation and new ideas which will lead to
success.
- Work together to achieve more, every great leader understands the importance of
collaboration with others to share information, strategies and success.
