REFRIGERANTS GLOBAL WARMING POTENTIAL

The Global Warming Potential (GWP) value was developed to allow comparisons of the global
warming impacts of different gases
• HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons)
• Do not contain chlorine and harmful to the ozone layer
(15 years)
• HFCs are a greenhouse gas with significant GWP
• GWP: > 1500 (R134a, R-404A, R-410A, R-407C)
• HFC+HFO blends
• HFC+HFO refrigerants causes no damage to the ozone
layer
• A1 classification has a low toxicity and is non-flammable
• GWP: >1300 (R-448A, R-449A,R-452A)
• GWP: >500 (R-513A)
• HFO (Hydrofluoroolefins) or A2L
• Unsaturated organic compounds
• Class 2L refrigerants have low flammability and slow
burning velocity
• GWP: < 150 (R-455A, R-454C, R-1234yf)
• EER: ≈9% less efficiency vs R290 at LBP conditions
LOW GWP REFRIGERANTS - R-290

• HC (Hydrocarbon)
• R-290 (Propane)
• Class A3 refrigerants that is flammable
• Natural, nontoxic refrigerants that have no
ozone depleting properties
• One of the most climate-friendly and cost-
effective refrigerants to cool and freeze an
application
• GWP: 3 (R-290)
• EER: ≈19% efficiency gain vs R-404A at
MBP conditions
• 150-gram charge limit per circuit (North
America) (Standalone)
• 500-gram charge size limitation per circuit
(Europe) (Split-unit)

*Can’t be near open flame (kitchen) or in hallway (fresh air route) or else must stay at 150-grams
