7 Areas and Volumes (III)

7.3 Frustums

Name: _________________________ Class: ___________

Objectives: 1. Learn the concepts of a frustum of a pyramid and a frustum of a circular cone.
2. Learn how to solve problems related to volumes and surface areas of a frustum.

Key Points
1. Volume of the frustum of a pyramid = volume of the larger pyramid − volume of the smaller pyramid

 Note that since AB // PQ,

we have △VAB ~ △VPQ.
(AAA)

2. Volume of the frustum of a circular cone = volume of the larger circular cone – volume of the smaller circular cone

 Note that since PB // QD,

we have △VPB ~ △VQD.
(AAA)

Note: If the plane that cuts the pyramid or the cone is not parallel to the base,
then the remaining part is NOT a frustum.

Find the volume of each of the following frustums of pyramids. (1 − 2)

1. Solution

2. Solution

Area of △ABC = 64 cm2,

area of △DEF = 25 cm2

3. The figure shows a frustum ABCDHEFG of height 8 cm.

The upper base and the lower base of the frustum are
both rectangles. BC = 3 cm, CD = 2 cm, FG = 9 cm,
GH = 6 cm and the height of pyramid VEFGH is 12 cm.

Solution

4. In the figure, ABCD is a frustum of a right circular cone.

The radii of the upper base and the lower base are 4 cm
and 6 cm respectively. The height of cone VAD is 6 cm
and the height of the frustum is 3 cm. Find the volumes of
