SPrING/SuMMer 2012
As a producing theatre, we are always especially proud when we are able to tour or transfer our work to other places, and so this Spring we are particularly excited to be welcoming back our production of The King and I, as part of its major UK tour. As The King and I tours nationally, our critically acclaimed Co-Production of Desh, with Akram Khan Company, embarks on an international tour both shows promoting Curve and Leicester worldwide. Looking ahead to our Curve Productions this Spring, we are thrilled to welcome international star Caroline OConnor to Curve. Caroline will take on the iconic role of Mama Rose in our production of Gypsy, the first major staging of this classic musical in the UK for many years. We are also co-producing with the acclaimed theatre company New Perspectives, on a brand new production of Michael Morpurgos The Butterfly Lion which will embark on a regional tour following its World Premiere here at Curve, as well as collaborating with the celebrated European company Familie Flz on their macabre and wickedly inventive show Hotel Paradiso. In our other major production of the season, and following last Summers smash hit Community Production of West Side Story, we are looking forward to working with Leicester and Leicestershires young talent this summer in our Community Production of Oliver!. As you browse through your brochure you will see that we also have a vibrant array of touring shows this season, which are sure to entertain and captivate. With Horrible Histories, and Tiddler and Other Tales for our younger audiences, two visits by Matthew Bournes wonderful dance company with Nutcracker!, and the opening of a brand new tour of his critically acclaimed Play Without Words, alongside Daves Leicester Comedy Festival, the Chinese State Circus and the return of Darbar, we are celebrating an eclectic range of performance this Spring and Summer. We look forward to welcoming you to Curve soon, whether it is to see a show, or simply to sample the new menu at our Curve Caf whilst taking in one of our free foyer events. Paul Kerryson

It also embraces the work of key collaborators Lou Reed and Brian Eno, and touches on some of his influences including the Velvet Underground and Kraftwerk amongst others. Michael Clark chose to become a choreographer believing that actions speak louder than words. He creates work which combines his classical integrity with a more complex, contemporary sensibility embracing virtue and vice, abandon and control, grace and embarrassment. Following the sell-out success of Swan Lake, Matthew Bourne returns to Curve with Nutcracker!, one of the most popular dance productions ever staged in the UK. This delicious theatrical feast has family-sized helpings of Matthew Bournes trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy. Nutcracker! follows Claras bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross Orphanage, through a shimmering, ice-skating winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland. Tchaikovskys glorious score and Anthony Wards unforgettable designs combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh and charmingly irreverent interpretation of this traditional favourite. Hailed by The Observer as the undisputed king of dance theatre, Matthew Bournes company New Adventures has produced some of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades including The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and Cinderella.

This jewel of American musical theatre is inspired by the memoirs of the famous burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee, and charts the story of her mother, the infamous Mama Rose, and her determination to live out her own dreams of stardom through her two daughters. Featuring many well-loved numbers from the legendary Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, including Everythings Coming up Roses, You Gotta Have a Gimmick, Some People and Roses Turn, Gypsy is a musical spectacular with bite. Originally premiering on Broadway in 1959 with Ethel Merman starring as Rose, Curves production of this classic musical fable is the first in the UK for many years. This much anticipated revival is directed by Curve Artistic Director Paul Kerryson (previous Sondheim credits include Follies, Pacific Overtures and Into the Woods, and other musical credits include The King and I, 42nd Street, Chicago, Mack and Mabel and Rent). Caroline OConnor, the international multi award-winning actress, will play Mama Rose (credits include Chicago, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Follies, her award-winning role in Piaf, and her Olivier Award-nominated performances in Mack and Mabel and Bombshells). This is a must-see for any musical fan! It is polished, it is joyful, it is all about jazz-hands and keeping the joint jumping HHHHH The Times

Alan Bennett has a very unusual neighbour. Parked at the bottom of his garden is a van. With a lady in it. The lady in the van is Miss Shepherd. Alan knows very little about her. She used to drive ambulances in the war, might have been a nun, sells pencils and pamphlets and has an unexplained aversion to piano music. But somehow she lives in the playwrights garden and has done for years. Alan Bennett is one of the nations best-loved playwrights, with plays including The History Boys, Talking Heads and The Madness of George III. The Lady in the Van stars Nichola McAuliffe, one of British theatres most loved actresses. As well as playing Sheila Sabatini in seven series of ITVs Surgical Spirit, Nichola won an Olivier Award for Outstanding Performance By An Actress In A Musical for her role in Kiss Me Kate (RSC). Directed by Sarah Esdaile, whose recent credits include The Deep Blue Sea starring Maxine Peake at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Chelsea, 1965. Behind the privileged faade of domestic social order lies a struggle for power, territory and sexual domination. In a suave Chelsea home an urbane master and his beautiful fiance welcome their new manservant, Prentice. What follows will change their lives forever and prove a surprising truth about love. Sexy, chic and thrillingly original, this dance drama is a spellbinding carnival of seduction, lust and power. Dazzling and dexterous, the versatile company stylishly evoke the darker side of the free-loving Sixties. Inspired by the 1963 film The Servant, this enthralling event is delightfully comic, scandalous and witty. After-Show discussion Thu 5 Jul

Strange things happen at Hotel Paradiso, a time-honoured mountain resort kept alive with some difficulty by an old lady and her family. While a mineral spring promises relief from physical and mental pain and the hotel proudly boasts four stars, dark clouds are nevertheless gathering in the bright sky. The son dreams of his great love while fighting his sister in his effort to gain control of the hotel. Meanwhile, the maid is in the habit of stealing the hotel guests valuables, and the cook chops up much more than just pork... A corpse turns up causing all of the hotels staff and guests to get mixed up in a turmoil of fatal events. The hotels decline seems to be inevitable, since corpses are always bad for business This is a dramatic nightmare steeped in black humour with a hint of melancholy.

A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, wheres the incentive to put things right? First performed at the National Theatre in 2007, this startling new play is fast becoming a contemporary-classic with young audiences, and has recently become a core set-text on the GCSE English syllabus, studied by 400,000 students nationwide each year. This brand new touring production designed and directed by the National Theatres Anthony Banks, features a cutting-edge design & soundtrack and an exciting cast of young actors.

Rising is a new evening of work performed by Aakash Odedra, exploring different processes and aesthetics to create a new personal language. Single-minded passion is never quite enough. Innovation is a collective performance. Unknown Aakash performs solos choreographed by Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan, and featuring lighting by Michael Hulls. All use Aakashs background in Kathak and Bharatanatyam to create a new flavour of contemporary dance. Aakash also presents a contemporary Kathak solo choreographed by himself.
The project has been commissioned by DanceXchange, Sampad, Eastman, The Hat Factory, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Dance, South East Dance, New Art Exchange, The Place, Curve Theatre, Leicester and funded by Arts Council England and Akademi.

In November 2010, Chris Larner accompanied his chronically ill ex-wife to Switzerlands Dignitas clinic. He came home with an empty wheelchair and a story to tell. This moving, bittersweet show reflects on the circumstances, morality and humanity surrounding the journey. In a candid, poignant and sometimes comic performance, Chris explores both the profound personal implications and the wider ethical considerations of the contentious issue of assisted dying. At the Edinburgh Fringe 2011, the show won the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award and was featured on BBCs Newsnight Review as a highlight of the festival. A wonderfully subtle and deceptively understated performance. This is story-telling of a very high order. HHHH The Times

Following hot on the heels of their acclaimed Moby Dick comes an eagerly-awaited collaboration: Spymonkeys hilariously inspired physical comedy combines with the playful storytelling verve of Kneehigh Artistic Director Emma Rice and writer Carl Grose to create an outrageous no-holds-barred subversion of the quintessential Greek tragedy.
