Dame Edna Everage, perhaps lesser known by his/her real name Barry Humphries, has announced her/his final show. After some 57 years, the Elton-esque getups of pink and purple and everything that shines and sparkles will be hung up in the bound-to-be-eclectic wardrobe. But before the final bow is taken and Dame Edna says farewell, Auckland will be treated to four shows at The Civic in August. The Eat, Pray, Laugh tour will be held over four nights from Saturday 11 August through to Tuesday 14 August, with tickets available from Ticket Master and Buy Tickets.

Favourite restaurant/caf? The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Favourite takeaway? McDonalds. Always has been, always will be. Favourite classic film? With the show titled Play It Again, Sams youd expect it to be Casablanca, but itd have to be The Sound of Music. Love me some Christopher Plummer, I do. Favourite party food? Fairy bread. Its so simple, but so good. Favourite song? This is a tough one. There are so many brilliant songs that evoke strong emotions and are just beautiful to listen to. So Id have to say the Duck Tales theme song. Favourite meal? Wholemeal. Favourite cause? Santa Cause. Favourite word? Sporadic. Its a funny word. Say it five times in a row and youll agree. Favourite type of groupie? The bakers! Its happened to me once someone liked what I did and made me a cake. Thats truly the way to my heart. Favourite body part on you? Does this mean what appendage would you prefer someone to gently make contact with your body while you were sleeping or something? I wouldnt like anyone to touch me while I was sleeping. That would freak me out. Favourite body part on someone else? My friend Justins sideburns. Theyre incredible. Favourite venue? Itd have to be Fringe Bar. Great supporters of comedy, lovely people, and it happens to be the venue for Play It Again, Sams. Favourite candy bar? I wish there was a bar that didnt sell drinks, but sold candy instead. That would be my favourite candy bar.

One Direction made history last week as their debut album Up All Night entered the US Billboard 200 chart at number one. This was the first time that a British group ever made it to the number one spot in the US with a debut album release. Late 90s troupe S Club 7 are gearing up for a full tour and two albums, kicking off this UK summer. Reports flew around the innernets last week with the announcement, and people everywhere started streaming their favorite S Club song before probably moving on to the Vengaboys. This announcement comes after the news that S Club 3 (the current incarnation) would be touring Australia. Clearly the demand is there, so why not? When talking to BBC Radio 1, Katy Perry was asked about a possible collaboration with gal pal Rihanna. The nutty popstar said, ...I want it to be like that Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin song Sisters Are Doin It for Themselves, not Beautiful Liar. Beautiful Liar was, of course, the single that Beyonce did with Miss Hipso-matic herself, Shakira. Now everybody is assuming that Katy has some beef with Beyonce and that Beyonce will be taking it personally. People are asking why Katy would dare to take a jab at the former Destinys Child/current mother of child singer, without realising that she actually didnt. Or maybe they just want to start some gossip, whatever. On the other hand, if Katy does have some Beyonce beef, surely the bootylicious queen could take the candy-pop sexstress, right? Semi-Permanent announced that documentary photographer Stefano De Luigi (World Press Photo winner in 1998, 2007 and 2009, winner of the Days Japan International Photojournalism Award 2010, initiator of the alternative cinematographic scene Cinema Mundi), will be joining the 2012 Auckland symposium in May. The Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand will be holding two fundraisers at Aucklands Q Theatre this Saturday 31 March. The Death to Cancer gigs will be comprised of two six-hour performances with a mixture of entertainment

from Tim Finn, Don McGlashan, Massad, Black River Drive, Villainy, Young Lyre, Invader Cain, Late Nyte Hype and many more. In addition to the fundraiser, the Melanoma Foundation is also hoping to raise money by way of merchandise. A range of tees designed specifically for the Foundation are now available for purchase online at deathtocancer.printmighty.co.nz. Tickets to the gig range from $50-$70 and are available from qtheatre.co.nz. Hillary Duff announced the arrival of her son, Luca Cruz Comrie (7 pounds, 6 ounces) via Twitter last week. Remember her? She was Lizzie McGuire. Nice to see that people can still live on after life as a teen idol. Where do you stand on Ashton Kutcher? Are you for him? The following news will either irk you or swoon you. The Two and a Half Men star has been confirmed as the commemorative 500th astronaut on Virgin Galactics SpaceShipTwo. The trip will see Kutcher cast some 100 kilometers above the Earths surface, costing him around $200,000. This flight is one of the initial planned voyages for Richard Bransons commercial spacecraft which have yet to actually see space. The trip will also see Kutcher become the first non-Richard Branson celebrity to go into space.

In the words of harajuku Barbie herself nicki Minaj, theres only one queen and thats Madonna, bitch. nickis impassioned proclamation at the close of MDNAs stomping anthem I dont Give A... could not be more sharply on-point. After nearly 30 years of making music, no one has come close to matching the impact of Madonna. she is truly peerless, ever-evolving and experimenting with sounds that continually set the pace for global popular music. Madonnas unwavering commitment to her craft has translated into sales of over 200 million albums worldwide, not to mention record-breaking tours that raise the bar for creativity. with MDNA, she breaks innovative new ground with songs that explode with ferocious rhythmic energy, while also offering the kind of irresistible pop melodies that are the hallmark of her classic compositions. since pre-release sales orders began exclusively on itunes worldwide on February 2, the album has reached number one on the stores charts in 50 countries and became the largest one-day preorder of any album in itunes history. Clearly, there is indeed only one queen... and thats Madonna. Jump back briefly to the 2012 superbowl. Madonna took to the stage for the half-time show with showcase stars of the moment nicki Minaj and M.I.A. and gave a stellar performance. there were some ups and downs in the show, but if theres one thing that Madge is through and through, its an entertainer. we can only assume that comes with being a perfectionist. we can only hope that doesnt get in the way of the queen delivering yet again with her new album. MDNA opens with Girl Gone wild, an anthemic collaboration with Italian club wunderkind Benny Benassi. Amid a frenetic collision of beats and keyboards, Madonna sets the tone for an album that she vividly characterises as having the intensity of a caged animal. From there, the listener is taken on the heart-racing, reckless joyride Gang Bang, a reunion with Ray of Light collaborator william orbit. At the first ominous, bass-soaked thump of the beat, its clear that Madonna and orbit are navigating previously uncharted musical territory. the unapologetic, foreboding tone of anger in her vocals builds to the point of violent mania. And just when you think she couldnt go any further, she does. this is Madonna at her most primal and animalistic. there is no denying the kinetic chemistry that Madonna shares with orbit, as exemplified by their additional MDNA creations. some Girls exudes an almost masculine funk swagger, while Im A sinner shows the pair indulging in jangly guitars and retro-splashed pop percussion. It is also with orbit that Madonna has created her most delicate compositions, most notably the deliciously romantic Falling Free and the gently percussive Masterpiece, which won a 2012 Golden Globe Award for its inclusion in her motion picture directorial debut, W.E.

In contrast to Madonnas pensive moments with orbit on MDNA are flourishes of spectacular joy with Benassi. It is during their dance floor-friendly tracks that long-time aficionados of the artists pure-pop efforts will experience absolute bliss. he brings out her cheeky, playful side on Im Addicted, which reveals its massive pop-hit potential in its booming bassline and its meticulous, infectious chorus chant. of the collaborations Madonna explores throughout this project, the results of her time with French dJ/producer Martin solveig are the most unexpectedly intriguing. their shared affinity for film and art imagery is unmistakable in their lyrics, drawing an ear-tickling contrast with the sweet, often varied tones of their music. turn on the radio has a charming, earnest quality, while the top-10 hit Give Me All Your Luvin has a sexy, surf-rock vibe that conjures images of sunshine within its first few instrumental bars. Perhaps most powerful of Madonna and solveigs tracks is the reflective I dont Give A..., during which she ruminates on the necessary end to a relationship with brutally sensitive prose like I tried to be a good girl. I tried to be a wife. diminished myself. I swallowed my light. Its a startlingly beautiful, delicate moment that evolves into a climax of extraordinary empowerment. MDNAis unequivocal proof that Madonna continues to be the worlds most inventive musical artist. her desire to bring bold new ideas to the mainstream is unparalleled. no doubt, this will be illustrated in a worldwide concert trek that will show the artist shattering the boundaries of a traditional stage show. Madonna understands and respects the simple purity of pop music, while thriving on the belief that people are as smart and hungry for truth and art as she is. It is that belief that will undeniably keep Madonna creating more inspired and inspiring music for years to come.

AMerICAn-IrIsh CoMedIAn des Bishop is scanning his rap sheet for the week that was. Preparing to film popular tV3 comedy show 7 Days, hes firing off questions and fishing for hooks and lines. Commenting on the local petty squabbles and quirky press stories should be easy for Bishop, whose stand-up shows are based around observing the local urban wildlife. I cant believe the fuss, all those teens fighting over scalped tickets for one direction, he rants. I mean who are they? Ive never even heard of them. You win a tV contest one minute and the next youre an Ipod link! Born in Queens, nYC, Bishop likes to joke he was too mean for the city so he was exported to Irish boarding school to corrupt them instead. when asked if he identifies more with Irish or American stereotypes, he quips, well, I was a half good drinker when I left Queens, but in Ireland Im a professional! Like many comedians, Bishop started his career as the class clown before getting into Irelands fledgling comedy scene. he toyed with television, making several shows, and did some early festival performances based around the ridiculous notion of Irish rap music. he also did various local projects before finally graduating to My Dad Was Nearly James Bond, a personal and confronting show that took him on an international tour. It covered all sorts of stuff my dads death of lung cancer, poverty, drinking and testicular cancer, which is a young mans disease, he recalls.

I got it in 2000, when I was just 24 years old. of course, it [cancer] can have some advantages. You know its always in someone elses hands, and it doesnt really matter it just feels good! I got quite proud of mine actually. I was showing it to everyone! sex and personal boundaries are other topics close to Bishops heart. hes telling me about new material for his upcoming tour, which will include new Zealand. Im going to cover sex during periods. I Googled the subject. After a palpable silence from this reporter, he continues. Ah, you see youre squeamish. why is it guys dont want to talk about it? the twittersphere is full of women who are okay with the idea. Men are wimps sometimes. speaking of sex, I ask if Ireland is still under the thumb of the Catholic Church when it comes to sex and morality. not any more. You might say the choir boys are under the rector! there is growing mistrust of the church, mainly thanks to the continuing rise in reports of child rape [by the clergy]. the church is an easy target. You can catch more of his inappropriate observations in his latest show, Des Bishop likes to Bang, when he graces the nZ International Comedy Festival with his unholy presence this May. wRiTTEn By TiM GuRaR

fouRTy-fouR yEaRs, TwEnTy-onE sTuDio aLBuMs anD sEvEnTEEn BanD MEMBERs MEans YES is a HaRD BanD To say no To.

ProG-roCK PIoneers Yes have had a career longer than most marriages. And like most marriages, the road to the present day hasnt been without its challenges. Across four decades, the bands line-up has cycled through no less than 17 members, including the departure of former vocalist Jon Anderson in 2004. this saw band take a four year hiatus, but the group still came back with Benoit david on vocals for a new album in 2011. Unfortunately though, Benoit was forced to leave the band early in 2012 due to illness, agreeing to be replaced for the April live shows. his replacement is vocalist Jon davison, with the rest of the line up consisting of bassist Chris squire, guitarist steve howe, drummer Alan white, and keyboardist Geoff downes. Bassist Chris squire is philosophical, and still eager to get the new album toured. we were all in tune with each other, we had trevor horn on board as producer and he contributed to some of the writing, he muses. their 21st studio album Fly From Here was welcomed by fans, despite the absence of Anderson. As the first album that featured david as the vocalist, apprehension would have been understandable, but squire is nothing but positive. he did a really good job, he says. were all happy with his performance. Fly From Here was a return to form; squire refers to it as one of the most enjoyable albums. the band certainly werent out of practise when it came to recording the new album either. the studio isnt a foreign place he quips, and its safe to say thats an understatement.

It perhaps goes without saying then that Yes is a sum of its parts as a band thats walked various different areas of music. Perhaps this is the bands secret with the various incarnations of Yes helping to define not only its sound over the course of the decades, but also allowing the band to stay in the game. the Benoit-led Yes have proven they can rival the classics with the new material, and performances led by davison are sure to result in breathtaking live shows. squire says theyre excited about coming to new Zealand. Playing live always gives me a new buzz, as well as playing new material. their show at Vector Arena on April 1 will be the only show they play in new Zealand, and with four decades of material to choose from, its a pretty safe bet this is one not to miss.

the Backyard (Ft. rodney Fisher)
songs froM The BACkYArd

if the name rodney fisher clicks instantly with you, conjuring memories of goodshirts reign over some pivotal summers in your formative years, then this album is made especially for you. Songs from the Backyard is a perfect way to describe this collection of lovely little tunes; these are guitar-around-the-fire songs that will have you grinning and swaying. At heart this is a folk album, dripping with nostalgia and whatever imagined halcyon days Fisher is recalling, youll wish you had experienced them along

with him. The production is golden and subtly layered, with a talented cast of local artists lending a hand (or voice). Its clear that Fisher has a fondness for the American folk traditions, with Songs from the Backyard recalling classic blues, country and bluegrass. Contained in these 8 tracks is also something undeniably unique and something Fisher can call his own, and I sincerely hope this isnt a one-off effort.

This album comes on a beautiful wood-encased UsB flash drive. Theres a lot to be said for the kind of novelty that shows both an authenticity and sincerity thats missing from todays lacklustre toocool electronic scene. Its clear that these four local boys have no time for not caring and are having a lot of fun building their own brand of clockwork electronica. Powerful production propels from the very first beat of Zombies. From there youre taken for a head-bouncing jaunt through an eclectic audioscape filled with simple lyrics about survival narratives, temporal musings and trivial comments on an increasingly jilted society. These seven songs (including one remix) reflect perfectly the steampunk/zombie/time travel aesthetic theyve adopted. Theres little room for thinking but plenty of space for dancing. Its a pleasure to listen to people taking fun so seriously.
WRITTEN BY JACK GABRIEL

Broodingly delicate, this album will leave you feeling slightly misplaced and even a little shell-shocked. If Salvador Dali were a modern-day composer, hed probably sound something like this. Recorded in Norway, and mastered in Austria, the experimental and eclectic sound has been likened to that of Godspeed You!, Black Emperor, and A Silver Mt Zion. Intro track Scratches starts lightly, builds up strings and then stops abruptly, and delicate rock guitar sparingly creates a fragile landscape which in turn is obliterated by noisy rock. Queer, melancholy vocals change unpredictably in octave, tempo, and frequency across the album, augmented by a vast array of instruments from cello, clarinet, sax, drums, electric guitar and violin. Sam Gray is a pianist and composer by trade, but he rightfully breaks the all the rules in this original and uncanny album.

This ambient take on new wave and indie creates a vivid and imaginative soundscape for listeners. Released on Auckland label Matron Records, Frend have crafted an album with vocals that could be compared to Talking Heads and musical ramblings similar to that of Jakob. Avant-garde sweetness takes you on a journey; tracks such as Last Hour rock along consistently, where as Penny will set you back, lounging on the hammock of youth. The vocals could do with some tonal change and variety and sometimes verge on monotonous, but theyre not without intent. A sparse five tracks inhabit the album (the album runs for just under 14 minutes), but perhaps this is simply a sampler to tickle your earbuds fingers crossed that Frend keeps up the production values, and find themselves gaining some well deserved air time.

evergreen metal outfit soulfly have just release their eighth album Enslaved, and its by far the heaviest to date. Despite also being busy with Cavalera Conspiracy, frontman Max Cavalera has assembled a stellar cast of musicians. Along with long-time guitarist Mark Rizzo, hes joined by Borknagar drummer David Kinkade and Static-X bass player Tony Campos. Enslaved is punishing and powerful, from the opening chords of Resistance through to the explosive closer Revengeance. As on their previous records Soufly mix thrash, hardcore and tribal music into a potent metal concoction. Plata O Plomo is accentuated by some wonderful Spanish guitars, and Devil Drivers Dez Fafara ups the ante on standout track Redemption Of Man By God. The ghost of Sepultura will always dog Soulfly, but Cavalera and co continue to carve their own path through the metal landscape, and make a hell of a noise doing it.

everything youve heard about The Raid is true. This is the best action film in years, one that doesnt muck around in terms of getting things cracking, barely letting up for its running time. A masterclass in economical filmmaking, The Raid applies the same brutality youll find in

its close-quarter combat scenes to the films structure, stripping back character development and narrative to the bare minimum required while still treating them as important parts of the film. The Raids vicious hand-tohand combat delights with its pace, and the camerawork puts

the audience close to the action in a manner that allows us to revel in the physicality of pencaksilat, the Indonesian martial art showcased. Whether director Gareth Evans is focusing on repelling wave upon wave of attackers or staging more traditional fight scenes with fewer participants, he does a great job at exciting with the films action, capturing a sense of panic when events reach their most frenetic and making viewers invest in his characters in The Raids more tense moments. This combination makes for such satisfying viewing that its easy to forget how much were

often prepared to overlook for the sake of enjoying an action movie when apparently this is all someone had to do the whole time do their best to make it really, really awesome.

The next Twilight? Battle Royale rip-off? reality Tv rumination? Going into the movie, I wasnt entirely sure which angle to come at The Hunger Games from. Theres such a huge variety of touchstones here American Idol, Big Brother, The Truman Show, The Running Man, teenage bullying, unrequited love, the one percenters vs. the rest of us, professional sports - it would be an achievement simply to keep things coherent, but director Gary Ross goes beyond that to create a character-focused arrow of a film that commands attention from start to finish. Jennifer Lawrence ably carries the film on her shoulders, appearing in practically every scene. She projects pluck, moxie and vulnerability in equal measure. The older supporting actors do stellar work to

ground the occasionally quite ridiculous-looking universe they inhabit Lenny Kravitz and Stanley Tucci especially. Male lead Josh Hutcherson lets the side down a bit with his woodenness, but there isnt a complete lack of chemistry between him and Lawrence. The lack of any gory on-screen violence doesnt take much away from the impact of what is occurring, and there are several impressively taut action set-pieces. The film only really lags when it stops to needlessly serve romance. After the climax occurs, the film hangs around for some follow-up scenes that fall a bit flat, ending the film on a somewhat muted note. But that doesnt mean Im not totally amped for the sequel. This movie rules.

far more entertaining than it seemed on paper, this extremely loose adaptation of the not particularly fondly remembered late 80s drama is the best comedy to be released so far this year. Abandoning the serious tone of the show was a step in the right direction, but its the underlying dynamic of the film that really makes it work: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatums characters in high school (where we first meet them) are respectively a weird nerd and a popular jock, but those exact traits render them in opposite power positions when they return as undercover cops to a high school world wholly unfamiliar to them. My fears that Hill was turning into a one-trick pony were offset by his performance in Moneyball, and its fun to see

him re-embrace his finely honed comedic persona here. Acting is not Tatums strong point but that suits his doltish character. The scenes of him bonding with the school nerds are among the films best. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller bring some of that films skew-whiff energy and never allow 21 Jump Street to settle into any one thing. The silliness occasionally undercuts the suspension of disbelief (especially during the inevitable big star cameo), but the stellar laugh-rate ensured I was never less than highly amused.
