1.5 The Overall Organization and Work Flow

DBF FM 94.0 Radio Organization and Work Flow

CHAPTER TWO
OVER ALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
2.1 How we get into the Company
We, believed that taking internship practice is necessary to the undergraduate engineering students to
apply their theoretical knowledge of the subject matter, we would have to search any companies engaging
in electrical engineering of the country such as electrical installation, operation of motor, generators or
any other related electrical engineering works. We were looking for such companies. And we would like
to express our great deal of thanks any way, gladly willing to accept three students coming up with such
requests were included already.

DBU-INDUSTRY linkage, on the other hand, had been preparing intern requesting forms that enable we,
to perform such agreements with the hosting company. Accordingly, it provides as an internship request
latter, contract forms, and evaluation papers to be filled by manager of the agency, attendance sheet and
agency activities reporting forms. Finally, we joined on FANA FM 94.0 which is being built by such
agency since September 12/2010 E.C.

2.2 The Section of the Company we have been working

The backbones of DBF 94.0 Radio Organization are technology department inside the
technology department there are five sub departments are there. These are:
 Radio Broadcasting.
 Maintenance.
 System administration.
 Internet service
2.2.1 Radio Broadcasting.
Radio broadcasting is the transmission or signal distribution of sound using the electrical energy.
When the transmission station radiates the radio waves, these are propagated through space and
received by the radio receiver. The first task of radio broadcasting systems is to change sound
into electrical energy. This electrical energy is called Audio signals. The equipment that changes
this energy is called Transducers. The second jobs of radio broadcasting system are to process or
change the electrical signal into the original signal (sound signal) at the receiver.
In radio broadcasting there are four different rooms. This Room are;
 Studio room.
 Control room.
 Transmitter room.
 Server Room.
2.2.1.1 Radio studio Rooms
Studio is the starting point of transmission of radio (or called station of transmitting signal
(sound)). The studio has two rooms which are studio A and B. Both studios have the following
equipment that has their own purpose.
a) Microphone: The main function of microphone is converting sound signal to the electrical
signal. It is an instrument that converts sound waves into an electric current usually fed into an
amplifier, and then to the broadcast transmitter.
b) Computer: Computer is used to receive the audience SMS and the journalist read this SMS,
daily event from BBC or Google event and report for the audience. Also comment is received.
c)Telos: To receive a customer call. A telos or telephone line is a single user circuit on a
telephone communication system.
d) Warning light: warning light is used to identify which studio (studio A or studio B) is on the
air.
e) GSP clock (global position system): is a space based satellite navigation system that provides
location and time information in all-weather conditions. It also called world clock. This clock is
set by the satellite not by person.
f) Head phone: the journalist is used to hear if he/she is on air and also to hear another
technician comments for him/her.
2.2.1.2. Control Room
Controlling the studio and prepare the output of the studio for further processing. In this room
there are many devices like:
I. Equalizer: is used to select the proper audio signal. Equalization may also be used to
eliminate unwanted sounds make certain instruments or voices more prominent,
enhance particular aspects of an instrument’s tone. Since equalizer adjust the
amplitude of audio signal at particular frequency.

Function of Equalizer.
 To increase gain before feedback.
 To compensate for Acoustical problems in the room.
 To tailor the tonel quality of the performance
II. Effective processor: is used to add different effect on the transmitted program like
background, music, wind, car sound and other sounds on drama, etc. It is used to
produce up to 101 effects. These effects for example echo high frequency, low
frequency, etc.

III. DAD software: is a software which is used to:

 Order the program which is used for the time of the news.
 Play out the music for radio station.
 DAD software has DAD 1 and DAD 2.The function is:If DAD 1 is for playing music and
DAD 2 is to order the program for the news and vice versa.
IV. Compressor/Limiter:
 Specially used for performer whose voice varies from very quiet to very loud, beyond to
the dynamic range of the sound system.
 Compressor is a piece of equipment which is create a number of effects on audio.
 Limiting drags the fader down which is imagine an invisible fader internal to the limiter
to anticipate future peaks when the level exceeds the threshold and the fader is only
slowly allowed to come back up.
 A limiter is a circuit that allows signal below specified input power to pass unaffected
while attenuating the peaks of stronger signal that exceed this input power.
 Limiting is also a type of dynamic range compression.
V. Memory player, CD player and cassette player: is used to play and store the program
that produces at different time.
VI. Gate:
 Specially used to eliminate low level background noise.
VII. Audio mixer:
Is an electronic device which combines the electrical sound signal from:
 Microphone.
 Telos.
 CD player.
 DAD software.
 Memory.
 Audio mixer is also used to adjust the volume and total quality of each input source to
achieve a harmonious and mix all sound sources.
 Also used as switch because of to order all input source step by step in a few seconds.
 Sometimes called as sound board, because of the technician hear the program by using
audio mixer if it was went to check the program before on air.

2.2.1.3. Radio Transmitter room.

This room consists of two transmitters these are:
In fana case there are two transmitters:
 3 kw FM transmitter
 2 kw FM transmitter
The 3KW transmitter has 55 watt .
it has 12 amplifiers modules each modules amplifies module 250 watt.
250*12=3000 watt or 3KW
The 2KW transmitter has 37 watt.
It has also 8 amplifiers modules each modules amplifiers module 250 watt.
250*8=2000 watt or 2KW
The transmitter is used to produce radio waves for transmission into space. It consists
 Oscillator.
 Buffer amplifier.
 Analog to digital convertor.
 Modulation encoder.
 RF amplifier.
 Band pass filter.
 Matching network.
 Antenna.
Oscillator: is produces a high frequency signal called a carrier wave usually crystal oscillator is
used. Radio frequency amplifier stages raised the power level of the carrier wave to a sufficient
level. The high power is transmitting the signal to long distance.
Buffer amplifier: is one that provides electrical impedance transformation from one circuit to
another. Buffer amplifier is used to amplified the received signal from oscillator.
Pre-driver: is again amplify the signal that received from buffer amplifier.
Audio input: The audio input are microphone from studio, CD player, cassette player, telos are
the audio input.
Analog to digital converter (ADC): Audio analog to digital converter works by repeatedly
measuring the amplitude of an incoming electrical sound wave (an electrical voltage) and
outputting these measurements as a long list of binary bytes. Digital signals are transmitted in
more efficient way than analog signal. Because of well-defined digital impulses are easier for an
electronic circuit to distinguish noise. When analog to digital converter is done there are:
 High resolution.
 Power consumption.
 Multicasting or broadcasting of signal.
 Many channels produced.
Modulation encoder: Modulation is the addition of information or the signal to an electronic or
carrier signal. Modulation can be defined as the process of combining an input signal (audio
signal) and high frequency (oscillator frequency) periodic wave form i.e. carrier at frequency fc
to produce a signal whose bandwidth is centered on fc. Encoder is device, circuit, and transducer,
software program that converts information from one format or code to another for the purposes
of standardization, speed, security or compressions. Encoder is convert message, information
into code. Encoding is the process by which the data is converted into digital format for efficient
transmission.
RF amplifiers: is used to amplify the generated signal to the radio frequency signal. The RF
splitter is provides RF driver signal to each 48 power amplifiers separately in section three
consist of tuning and loading.
Band pass filter: to pass the required frequency (1035 KHz) of AM radio and rejects the other
frequency.
Matching networking: is used to balance the impedance (resistance) of transmitter with the
impedance of antenna which is 50 ohm. Transmitter is a device that transfer a voice or data
signal into modified (modulated) higher frequency signals and feed it to antenna where it is
radiated into free space as an electromagnetic wave at radio frequency. Receiver is a device that
converts the radio frequency signal (fed it from antenna detecting the electromagnetic wave from
free space) back into voice.
Antenna: is an electrical device which converts electric power in to radio wave and vice versa. It
is used with a radio transmitter or radio receiver. In transmission a radio transmitter supplies an
electric current oscillating at radio frequency (i.e. a high frequency) to the antenna’s terminal and
the antenna radiates the energy from the current as electromagnetic waves (radio waves). In
reception, an antenna intercepts some of the power of an electromagnetic wave in order to
produce a tiny voltage at its terminals that is applied to a receiver to be amplified.

Types of antenna
Folded dipole antenna: it consist of a basic dipole with an added conductor connecting the two
ends together to make a complete loop of wire or other conductor. It is used for FM radio
transmitter. It increases in feed impedance that it provides.
Monopole antenna: is a class of radio antenna consisting of a straight rod shaped conductor
often mounted perpendicularly over some type of conductive surface called ground plane. The
driving signal from transmitter is applied or for receiving antennas the output signal to receiver is
taken between the lower end of the monopole and the ground plane. It is used for AM (SW,
MW) radio transmitter. It can be design as: the wave length is equal to the speed of light over the
oscillator frequency. λ = c ⁄fos let λ=L, where λ is wave length, L is the length, c is speed of light
and fos is oscillator frequency of 1035 KHz. L=c/fos =3×108m/s/1035KHz ≈290m, which is very
largest antenna. To design antenna the formulas use. L= λ/2, λ/3, λ/4… but the most popular for
design AM antenna is λ/4=290/4=72.3m.
 Coaxial cables transmit high frequency electrical signals through connector without
interference.
 HPA high power amplifier is amplify the power of modulating signal to the radio
frequency.
 Horn is used for focus and also used to correct polarization.
2.3 AM and FM transmitter.
2.3.1 AM Transmitter.
The amplitude modulation is being performed in a stage called the modulator. Two signals are
entering it, high frequency signal called the carrier signal and low frequency signal which is
called message signal that can be modulated. The AM is includes the shortwave SW and medium
wave MW.
Medium wave MW: is the part of medium frequency radio band use mainly for AM radio
broadcasting. The wavelength in this band are long enough that radio waves are not blocked by
buildings and hills and can propagated beyond the horizon following the curvature of the earth;
this is called the ground wave. Practical ground wave reception typically extends to 200-300
miles, with longer distance over terrain with higher ground conductivity and greatest distances
over salt water. The MW band ranges from 0.53-1.73 MHz
Short wave SW: is radio transmission using short wave frequency, generally 1.6-30 MHz just
above the MW broadcast. Short wave radios are used for long distance communication by means
of sky wave or skip propagation in which the radio waves are reflected or refracted back to
earth from the ionosphere allowing communication around the curve of the earth. Short wave
radio is used for broadcasting of voice and music and long distance communication to ships and
air craft or to remote areas out of reach of wired communication or other radio service.
2.3.2 FM Transmitter
Information being transferred i.e. the modulating signals a signal from some low frequency
source. It is being amplified in low frequency amplifier and then led into the high frequency
oscillator where the carrier signal is being created. The carrier is high frequency voltage of
constant amplitude, whose frequency is in the absence of modulating signal equal to the
transmitter’s carrier frequency. In the oscillatory circuit of the high frequency oscillator a
capacitive diode is located. It is a diode whose capacitance depends up on the voltage between its
ends, so when being exposed to low frequency voltage, its capacitance is changing in accordance
with this voltage. Due to that frequency of the oscillator is also changing, i.e. the frequency
modulation is being obtained. The FM signal from the high frequency oscillator is being
preceded to the power amplifier that provides the necessary output power of the transmission
signal.

Advantage of FM over AM radio communication

The "AM band" (0.53-1.7 MHz) is much lower in frequency and signals can travel farther,
following the curve of the earth and also via skipping between the earth and the edge of the
atmosphere. Unfortunately, the lower frequencies also limit the bandwidth that each station can
use or would require fewer stations. It high cost to build it, have unwanted signal or noise. The
"FM band" (88-108 MHz) is in a frequency range that is basically line of sight from the tower
since it does not follow the curve of the earth well. There a much wider range of frequencies that
can be used.
2.4 UPS room (Uninterrupted power supply)
In this room there are switches (breaker) and Dehydrator. UPS provides power when there is a
power loss for short time until the ATS (Automatic transfer switch) changes over from EEPCO
to generator and the reverse. It consists of 24 Batteries to store DC power. Those Batteries
consists of H2SO4 and lead. There is also an Invertor which inverts the coming DC from UPS to
AC and applies to Transmitter.
A Dehydrator is also found in this room .It is used to prevent the moisture in the coaxial cable.
2.5 Server Room
It is highly secured room and performs open twenty four hours. Server is a powerful computer
which is used as a library and stores the programs which are on the air.
The server consists of two parts:-
1. Main server: handles all the documents such as music, news, promos, etc.
2. Back up: contains copies of previous data.
 Router is found in this room that used for connecting server and service provider for
internet access.
2.6 Maintenance room
Maintenance means keeping the devices from faults. This means keeping the originality of that
device.
There are two methods for fault control.
1. Preventive maintenance: used to prevent fault before the material or device is fail for long live
of the device.
2. Corrective: used to maintained material after the material or device is fail or damaged for
using it again.
The material that used to check the device for maintained is:
 Signal generator.
 Multimeter.
 Oscillator.
 In this room we are informed how to save ourselves and others from different injuries
like:
 Electric shock.
 Cancer, when stayed for long time around the Dish.
2.7 System Administration Room
In the system administration room the work done is that the central data arrangement like
ingested, digital archiving system, editing file and control the central storage devices.
Ingested data: is the process of obtaining, importing and processing data for later uses or storage
in the central storages .Digital archive systems: are collections of documenting the DBFM radio
broadcasting history
Including copies of television and radio broadcasts, internal documents, on line content etc.
Editing file: is check the idea of the files of DBFM radio broadcasting as politically, socially and
economically.
2.8 Task we have been executing
There was no specific material given to us to execute the task alone because all material was
only for system operation .But it was familiar with the materials which used in DBFM and
developing new idea and overall programs that have to done. Sometimes technicians asked that if
the faults happen how it was solve the faults then we tell us procedure under control of them and
they correct us the step if there is a mistake. For more information we asked our supervisor what
expected from us and what material (referring material) is used for further information then
supervisor gives us;
 Hard copy
 Soft copy
To more understanding the system.
2.9 Procedures we have been using while performing our work tasks.
All materials in DBF FM 94.0 is only for operate the system take in mind this and we do under
Control of technicians.
The procedure we have been using;
 The first task we know theoretically about the material used for that operation and also
each function of that material by reading the manual.
 Then go to practically with the help of technicians.
 Understand the material which we know by the theory.
 We ask them each function of the material.
 After we know the functions properly then perform our task under the control of
technicians. Example: if the fault is happen in Radio Studio:
 First we know all the materials in Radio Studio by theoretically and there function.
 Go to practically with the help of technician.
 Identify the problem and give the solutions for that problem. These procedures are done
by analyzer equipment’s.
2.10 How good we have been in performing Our Work tasks.
When we compare with theoretical knowledge we were understand more practically and we were
seen material with practically, so it was good to develop our abilities. On practical problem we
were very interested and we were to ask our supervisor as well as to read from manuals and
internet. Due to this reason we were good when we were performing. But that means we are not
perfect, because some extent there is also confusion in our work these are:
 Lack of practice lab.
 A lot of new material when refer from manual.
 No material used for ourselves to practice, that means the materials found in that
company is using only for system operation.
 Engineers have no interest to show more and always busy by Organization meeting.
 Due to these reason our practice are depend on our supervisors and technicians in doing
task these are affect our good when performing our work task.
2.11 Challenges we have been facing while performing Our Work task
We faced different challenges during our internship trough four month from these:
 We cannot move freely in Organization to access what we want because DBF FM 94.0
was very secure and all inside the Organizations are hold by AMHARA policy.
 Cannot hold any material like: flash, memory, mobile, pc for take any data from their
computer.
 No practice lab to develop more knowledge.
 No more engineer who manage the internship student.
 No more reference books in their library to get more information about the Organization
material.
 All material in Organization was on functional no for practice.
 Through four month internship we were found by our interest who show the material
because technician and engineer have no more interest to show the material because busy
by Organizational job.
 We cannot seen all stations of DBFM because the supervisor was busy by the
Organizational job and meeting.
 There was no sitting place because in studio the place was only for technician so we stand
for above four o’clock when the technician was show the material.
 It was too much difficult to adapt the weather condition so all this challenge was affect
our practice knowledge.
2.12 Measures taken in order to overcome the challenges.
We take the measure to overcome the challenges through four month internship from these:
 By showing tolerance for every challenges.
 By waiting the time when the engineer was free to more understanding the material
through practice to gate more knowledge.
 By approaching the policy of Organizations by peace to move in all sub departments.
 By reading some material (referring material) which related to our work.
 By asking the question our supervisor and technician.
 By trying to advice that to permit the material to take data from their computer and
prepare computer to do project for next internship student.
 By telling that to prepare sitting place and practice lab and material for practice.
 By advising that to prepare constant advisor for internship student for next time.
CHAPTER THREE
BENEFITS GAINED FROM THE INTERNSHIP
3.1 Improving practical skills
The most and main benefits that we got from internship were as follows:
 Commitment to work.
 Punctuality.
 Communication skills.
 Work ethics.
The overall benefits that we got from internship program by improving practical skills can be
explained as blow:
 By practically we know the function of electronic equipment.
 We know how adjust the electronics equipment’s practically.
 We know how the signal flows from studio to audience practically.
 We know how the electronic equipment was maintained practically
 3.2 Upgrading theoretical knowledge
This internship was very interested because it was upgrade theoretical knowledge from practical
knowledge. As we more understand theoretically about communication system in previous by
the university lecture and understand the material used for communication system in DBFM
Company, so it was simple to practice. This day to day practice was upgrading our theoretical
knowledge. We upgrade theoretical knowledge that we have previous by adding another
theoretical knowledge from internship by asking or referring:
 Our supervisor.
 From manual that related to our work.
 Asking technician about material.
In generally these internship program has given chance to enhance our theoretical
knowledge.
 That means when we see practically it was more remembered theoretical knowledge that
we learned previous, so we got full upgrade of theoretical knowledge that we have
previous.
3.3 Improving interpersonal communication skill
The main issue of this internship program was to develop our interpersonal communication skill
through our practice. This interpersonal communication skill was between ours and
Organizational worker and also between our partners, these was by asking questions our
Organizational workers who related to our work and response from worker and also between our
partners around the issue of our work.
This improving our interpersonal communication skills was make:
 Confidence on our field work for future.
 To know the behaviours of the field work.
 To develop more relationship with the worker.
 Confidence to ask the questions to whatever the directions through our work.
 To motivate to more relationship if we went to other Organization by the case of job.
So we were feeling happiness in case of more improving our interpersonal communication skills
from what we have before.
3.4 Improving team playing skills
First of all what was the team means? Team means group, so whatever the solution to the
problem was through the group discussion (through making the team). We make the team to
found the solution to the problem and to understand what we receive from Organizational
worker, because what I know, my friend is don’t know and vice versa. We were making sociable
between our partners and to adapt more tolerance between our group or team and we develop the
