Mantle A layer inside a planetary body bounded

below by a core and above by a crust.

Crust The outermost solid shall of a rocky planet,

dwarf planet, or natural satellite.

Tectonic Plates The pieces of the earth’s crust and uppermost

mantle, together referred to as the
lithosphere.

Earthquakes A sudden and violent shaking of the ground,

sometimes causing great destruction, as a
result of movements within the earth’s crust
or volcanic action.

Plates Each of the several rigid pieces of the earth’s

 lithosphere which together make up the
earth’s surface.

Solar System The collection of eight planets and their

moons in orbit around the sun, together with
smaller bodies in the form of asteroids ,
meteoroids, and comets.

Magma Hot fluid or semifluid material below or

within the earth’s crust from which lava and
other igneous rock is formed and cooling.
