FOREST RESOURCES
INVENTORY
refers to the listing of living and non-
living resources in the forest with the
purpose of using the information for
the proper management and
utilization of such resources
FOREST RESOURCES
INVENTORY
• Provides information on the resources
according to species composition, ownership
and management status, size of holdings,
standing volume and growing stock, felling and
removals and their management and uses
• Monitors the extent of forest and forest cover
change over time
• Supports decision-making for forestry policies
and programs at the sub-national, national,
regional and international level
FOREST RESOURCES
INVENTORY
Required Information:
1. productivity of the growing stock of
trees
2. species composition
3. tree size distribution
4. quantity of growing stock
5. tree volume increment
6. size classes
Common Tree Measurements

TREE DIAMETER TREE HEIGHT

BASAL AREA (m2) VOLUME (m3/ha) 6

SAMPLING IN
FOREST
RESOURCES
INVENTORY
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
• small portions of the forest which are
considered representative of the whole forest
area
• data collection are then performed on this
sampled area to provide the ESTIMATES of the
desired information of the total forest

SAMPLING
ADVANTAGES

Reduced cost Greater speed

Greater scope Greater accuracy

SAMPLING DESIGN
• Obtain highly precise estimates which
contain small sampling error
• Gives less sampling error with the
same amount of expenditure and for
the same time
SYSTEMATIC
SAMPLING

SYSTEMATIC
SAMPLING
• NON-RANDOMIZATION of the selection
of the sampling units except for the
starting point of the survey
• Sampling units are selected according to a
pre-specified pattern

SYSTEMATIC
SAMPLING
Reasons for its application:
1. The location of sample units in the field is
often easier and cheaper
2. There is a feeling that a sample
deliberately spread on the entire
population will be more representative
than a random sample

Cruiselines (Dcl)

Length of the Forest (Lf)

• sample plots are already distributed/located along the cruiselines

• cruiselines are established perpendicular to the baseline
• reduced amount of work
• reduced systematic error for large forests surveys
• shape may be SQUARE or CIRCULAR; usually fixed in area
LINE-PLOT SAMPLING METHOD

Area sampled; usually the Given that the

area of circular plots is area of the plot
equal to 0.1 ha
is 0.1 ha, what is
the radius of the

SAMPLING INTENSITY
• governed by:
• Variability of the stand, allowable inventory
costs and desired standard precision
• expressed in percentage (%)
• referred to as percent estimate (PE)

𝐴𝑠 where:
𝑆𝐼% = As = area sampled
𝐴𝑓 Af = area of the forest
LINE-PLOT SAMPLING METHOD
SAMPLE PROBLEM

• Supposed a 5% estimate of volume of

merchantable timber in a 4,000-ha Makiling
forest is desired. The area to be sampled is:

𝐴𝑠 = 𝑆𝐼 % × 𝐴𝑓
𝐴𝑠 = 0.05 × 4,000 ℎ𝑎
𝐴𝑠 = 200 ℎ𝑎
LINE-PLOT SAMPLING METHOD
• Assuming a circular plot size of 0.1 ha, then the total
number of plots, Np, to be established and measured
to the ground is determined using the formula:

𝐴𝑠 where:
Np= total number of plots in the sample
𝑁𝑝 = As = area sampled
𝐴𝑝 Ap= area of the plot

hence,
200 ℎ𝑎
𝑁𝑝 = = 2,000 plots
0.1 ℎ𝑎/𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑡
