H0: Favorite magazine is independent of type of car owned H1: They’re dependent

Here’s Minitab’s analysis on this.

Expected count
Contribution to Chi-square
Pearson Chi-Square = 6.275, DF = 2, P-Value = 0.043

You should to obtain the χ2-stat value of 6.275 manually. The values below each observed
frequency are the expected frequency for the cell and the cell’s contribution to the total χ2-stat.

The critical value with 2 DF is 5.991, so the decision rule is to reject H0 is the test stat > 5.991.
Since 6.275 > 5.991 we’d reject H0 and conclude that there is a relation between the type of car
driven and the favorite magazine. You can’t determine the exact p-value from our table, but you
should be able to determine that it is between 0.025 and 0.05.

Expected count
Contribution to Chi-square

Pearson Chi-Square = 7.352, DF = 4, P-Value = 0.118

Again, you should be able to manually obtain the numerical results, with the exception of the p-
value (you should be able to determine from our table that it is larger than 0.10). The critical
value is 7.79 (reject H0 if test stat > 7.79). Since 7.352 < 7.79, we do not reject H0. We conclude
that the recommended action is not related to the inspector used.
