This Technical Bulletin provides useful
information when cylinder liners have to be
changed and/or replaced by new ones.

An allocation table with IMO ID numbers

shows the cylinder liners which can still be
used after the conversion from CLU-3 to
Retrofit Pulse Lubrication System (RPLS).

Solution
With only a minor adaptation, the CLU-3
cylinder liners can be used also after the
RPLS was applied.

This solution has been approved by the

class societies and is in line with the
Technical File.

Introduction
This Service Bulletin provides knowledge to customers and operators about the
interchangeability of the CLU-3 and Pulse cylinder liner executions with respect
to the IMO ID numbers stated in the Technical File. The information is intended
for owners and operators of vessels with the keel laid on or after 1st January
2000, with Pulse Lubricating System (PLS) originally installed or retrofitted.

Comparison between PLS and CLU-3 cylinder liner execution

The PLS is based on a lubrication module with integrated electronics and newly
developed lubricators. Cylinder liners for the PLS system have only one
lubricating quill level, whereas the CLU-3 cylinder liners have two lubricating quill
levels.
When converting the lubricating system from CLU-3 to Pulse execution, the
upper lubricating quill level of the CLU-3 cylinder liner will be plugged.

Note:
By plugging the upper row of lubricating quills of the cylinder liners of CLU-3
executions, the standard will be the same as the cylinder liners of PLS
executions and therefore the cylinder liners are interchangeable.

NOx relevance
The most influential parameters related to NOx emissions when changing cylinder
liners are known to be the scavenge port position (in the cylinder liner) and the
cylinder liner placement (protrusion above engine block, determining the port
position in engine stroke). Any change in these parameters will affect the engine
thermodynamics.

Important:
For the cylinder liners under consideration, these parameters remain unchanged,
and as such the interchangeability between the cylinder liners is presented as an
option.
