This Bulletin includes instructions for ship operators regarding the IMO compliance of RTA engines.
The following information supports the ship operators to deal with the procedures which are relevant
for keeping IMO compliance, and to simplify the procedures for replacement / adjustment of NOx
relevant components / settings.
The NOx Technical Code, Annex VI of Marpol 73/78 requires the following procedures to verify
compliance with the IMO NOx regulation:
1. Official NOx measurements on engine manufacturer’s testbed showing compliance with the
IMO NOx regulation and specification of NOx relevant components and settings in the
’Technical File’
2. Periodical and intermediate checks on board of the ship according to the procedure described in
the ’Technical File’, which is kept on board of the ship (’On board verification procedure’: check
of NOx relevant components and settings).
Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd has distributed a reference layout for the ’Technical File’ to the engine
manufacturers in order to define the NOx relevant components and settings and the procedure to
check them for compliance on board of the ship.
These NOx relevant components and settings are identified either
by an identification number on the part
or
by measurement of the relevant dimension/parameter of the component/setting.
This Service Bulletin should be kept in a separate file in the control room. The respective pages or
tables of the Service Bulletin with modifications to the Operating Manual, Maintenance Manual
or Code Book should be copied and filed in the respective Manual or Book.
2. IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS
Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd has set up a well defined ID-numbering system, the so called
Sulzer ID-numbering system, for NOx relevant components (see Service Bulletin RTA-48 dated
20.09.99), which is standard for IMO compliant Sulzer RTA engines.
The Sulzer ID-numbers have the following structure:
LN-xxyyzz
where LN: The “Low NOx” label, making the number easy to find
where xxyyzz: An identification number with two letters and four digits
The engine manufacturer may use his own system for marking NOx relevant components. But the
corresponding Sulzer ID-numbers must be included without exception in addition to the engine
manufacturer’s numbers in the ’List of NOx relevant components and settings’ of the Technical File
(see example on page 4). By indicating both ID-numbers (from engine manufacturer and from
Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd) wordwide availability of NOx relevant components with the correct
marking for the customers can be guaranteed.
3. PARAMETER MEASUREMENTS
The NOx relevant parameters, which are being measured, are listed in the ’List of NOx relevant
components and settings’ of the Technical File (see example of ’List of NOx relevant components and
settings’ on page 4).
All these parameters have to correspond to the values as indicated in this list.
The mean value of the Injection delivery begin (defined as fuel pump suction valve closing) over all
cylinders should be in the range of 0.0 to –0.3 CA.
For the individual cylinders an additional tolerance of ± 0.2 CA is applicable, such that the injection
delivery begin for individual cylinders may be adjusted within the range from
+0.2CA to –0.5CA.
Note: The tolerances indicate that normally only retarded injection is allowed.
The ’Fuel Quality Setting’ (FQS) is adjustable by the user within a defined range in order to reach
the firing pressure as indicated in the’List of NOx relevant components and settings’.
Note: The firing pressure (average from all cylinders) must not exceed the values as indicated in the
’List of NOx relevant components and settings’.
Note: Sensors and gauges used in connection with on-board adjustments and verifications must be
applied, serviced and calibrated according to manufacturer’s guidelines and Annex VI
requirements (NOx Technical Code Appendix 4).
Action 4:
Record every adjustment of the FQS including new setting (CA) of the FQS, date of
adjustment, resulting firing pressure and sheets with measured cylinder pressure curves by pres-
sure indicator in the ’Engine’s Record Book’(see sample page 5), which has to be kept on board
of the ship.

However, Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd can not take any liability for any or all information contained
in this or any other Service Bulletin.
Changes of any nature to the form and or to the content of this or any other Service Bulletin as
published by Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd, are not permitted.
The following list summarizes all components and settings, which must be respected to comply with
the Annex VI to Marpol 73/78 of the IMO.
