Crimes of Yesterday and of Today . . .

T his First Friday of March is an opportunity for us to reflect

on the reasons why Jesus asked St. Mary Margaret Alacoque
for acts of reparation for the many offenses perpetrated
against him. The Lord is, indeed, insulted and reviled in so many
ways. But we should not all too easily conclude that such crimes
are committed only by some “big sinners” who live in our society.
Today’s biblical readings are an invitation to all of us to see if, in one
way or another, we too have not been among those who have caused harm
to our neighbor as the children of Jacob did to their brother Joseph. We
should ask ourselves if we, too, sometimes have not behaved like the tenant
farmers in today’s Gospel parable. And if so, we ask God’s forgiveness.

so much that they would not
even greet him.

ers had gone to pasture their
father’s flocks at Shechem,
Israel said to Joseph, “Your
brothers, you know, are tend-
ing our flocks at Shechem.
Get ready; I will send you to
them.”
So Joseph went after his
brothers and caught up with
them in Dothan. They noticed
him from a distance, and be-
fore he came up to them, they
plotted to kill him. They said to
one another: “Here comes that
master dreamer! Come on,
let us kill him and throw him
into one of the cisterns here;
we could say that a wild beast
devoured him. We shall then
see what comes of his dreams.”
When Reuben heard this,
he tried to save him from their
hands, saying: “We must not
take his life. Instead of shed-
ding blood,” he continued,
“just throw him into that cis-
tern there in the desert; but
do not kill him outright.” His
purpose was to rescue him from
their hands and return him
to his father. So when Joseph
came up to them, they stripped
him of the long tunic he had on;
then they took him and threw
him into the cistern, which was
empty and dry.
They then sat down to their
meal. Looking up, they saw a
caravan of Ishmaelites coming
from Gilead, their camels lad-
en with gum, balm, and resin
to be taken down to Egypt.
Judah said to his brothers:
“What is to be gained by kill-
ing our brother and conceal-
ing his blood? Rather, let us
sell him to these Ishmaelites,
instead of doing away with
him ourselves. After all, he is
our brother, our own flesh.”
His brothers agreed. They sold
Joseph to the Ishmaelites for
twenty pieces of silver.

sent his son to them, thinking,
‘They will respect my son.’

What will the owner of the
vineyard do to those tenants

When the chief priests
and the Pharisees heard his
parables, they knew that he
was speaking about them. And
although they were attempting
to arrest him, they feared the
crowds, for they regarded him

DOING REPARATION IN AN AGE OF “DEDMA”
Kalakbay at Katoto
“Dedma” has become part of the lingua franca in Philippine
se ng over the past decade or so. The word stands for
the shortened version of “dead malice” which is a literal
transla on into what used to be known as “carabao” Eng-
lish of the Tagalog concept “patay malisya,” which means
to feign ignorance, to pretend not to no ce, to ignore, or
to simply not care a hoot about something.
Dedma is a complex concept that aptly captures an equally
complex reality of our “overly s mulated” postmodern
context.
Let us unpack this a bit.
By overs mula on, I mean a host of both pleasant and –
mostly unpleasant condi ons that surround us all Filipinos,
par cularly those who, according to certain quarters in the
Philippine sociological scene, belong to the “popular (as
dis nct from the dominant) culture of Philippine society –
that is, the hoi polloi, or the common, regular folks. Among
others, I refer to the culture of “noise” around us – blaring
radios, karaoke singing par es ll late into the night, the
ear-spli ng horns in all our traffic-clogged thoroughfares
and back streets, the endless cha er everywhere, barkers
at jeepney and bus-stops, the street vendors and hawkers
en cing customers at every corner, the neighbors who
regularly quarrel noisily in our neighborhoods, etc. The list
is endless.
In an age of informa on overload and in the context of a
social media oversaturated world, we are literally forced to
find our own inner quiet nooks by exercising “dedma” at
every turn. For sheer survival, we all need to learn to turn
off the dial of physical, psychological, mental, and emo onal
overs mula on that plague us.
But there is a nega ve side to all this. Whilst we learn to
ignore most of these unwanted s muli, we also learn to be
passive and indifferent, to not care, and show a perpetual
nonchalant a tude. This shows, too, and most especially in
the passivity towards religious symbols and religious teach-
ings. We learn not to care, too, for solemnity and decorum
and the proper disposi ons that we ought to have over
sacred moments, places,and events. We can even “ignore”
the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and
behave irresponsibly and irreverently inside the places of
worship.
This is what St Margaret Mary Alacoque so passionately
advocated for – to pay repara on for the many “sins” we
commit against the duty of worship we all ought to give to
God. Let our Mass and our par cipa on at the Holy Hour
today be one such act of repara on for all our failings in
this regard. Sacred Heart of Jesus, meek and mild, have
mercy on us!
