FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Most cultures experience evolutions in the use of registers or words in both formal and informal
settings. In the Philippines, for example, some linguistic phenomena have taken the country by storm,
affecting the way people communicate with each other. This is briefly explained in the excerpt below.

What do you think is the next linguistic phenomenon that will evolve in the Philippines? Why do you say
so?

Language is having a great contribution and role in our daily living, it allows us to communicate and
understand each other. But, as time passes by there's a lot of changes in our language because of
modernizations and because Filipinos are good in inventing new words just like the "slang" and also
known as "millennial slang". It is commonly heard at the street and commonly uses by the jobless
people in the street.

For me, linguistic phenomenon that will evolve next in the Philippines is the g- words. It is adding g-
sound/letter for every syllable of a word. Just for example, "tagaraga" which means Tara, "puguntaga"
meaning is punta. Why do I say so? Because, one time I heard and I witnessed that a group of people
using it. I felt isolated and curious of what they saying because I don't understand and I don't have any
idea what kind of language is that. But, they look so expert and skillful while using it because they
interact and exchanging thoughts to each other. And a friend told me that it is g-words that it is adding
g-letter for every syllable of words. Even it is already existed I think it will be the next linguistic
phenomenon because it is not that popular and well- known by the other Filipinos.
