Introduction

Problem statement

In the present Project 1, you need to design a displacement function for a cam for the entire
one full rotation, i.e., 0° ≪ 𝜃 ≤ 360° with the following constraints:

1. The displacement functions consist of the following sequences: Low dwell - 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒 –
high dwell – 𝑓𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙 as shown in Figure 1.
2. The functions 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒 and 𝑓𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙 are provided in Table 1.
3. The values of ∆𝛽1 and ∆𝛽2 for each dwell segment are fixed which are provided in
Table
4. Select one value of 𝛽2, perform the s-v-a-j functions analysis, state the s-v-a-j functions
for each segment, write a computer program and plot the s-v-a-j functions with respect
to θ.
5. Repeat Step 4 by selecting another value of 𝛽2.
6. Repeat Step 4 one more time by selecting another value of 𝛽2.
7. Compare the results of Steps 4, 5 and 6 and conclude which Step provides the best
solution for the cam design.

Discussion

The higher the velocity, the higher the power required to move. The greater the acceleration,

the greater the force. In addition, the greater the jerk, the greater the noise and vibrations. We

can notice that the best design of the cam will be when the beta2 is equal to 180. Because the

speed is less compared to the speeds at Beta2 120 and Beta2 150. In addition, the acceleration

is less at Beta2 180. And the rate of noise and vibrations are also less.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have successfully achieved the aim of this project by using MATLAB

software. We were able to design a displacement function for a cam for one full revolution.

Displacement functions were consisting of (Low dwell, 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒 = 4-5-6-7 polynomial, high dwell

and 𝑓𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙 = cycloidal). Moreover, we select three different values of 𝛽2 (120 , 150, 180) in

order to perform s-v-a-j functions and state them for each segment. Using MATLAB software,

we developed a code to plot s-v-a-j functions versus 𝜃 for each function displacement.

Furthermore, we obtained the results, analyzed them, discussed the observations and concluded

some interesting facts such as having high velocity will lead to high acceleration and high

acceleration will cause high contact force and this will lead to an erosion in cam, and this is

totally a bad thing for our cam as well as high jerk will result in high vibration and noise. As a

result, we concluded that the best solution for the cam design is case III when 𝛽2 = 180 because

of (less velocity, less acceleration and jerk) Thus, there will be no high erosion and vibration

in our cam it will be good and works smoothly without a high noise.
