1. Introduction
This report covers the Complex Engineering Problem (CEP) of designing a Steam
Power Plant to produce 250MW of Electricity.
• One Reheat
• Two Feed heaters ( One Open & One Closed )
It includes varied aspects like the mathematical Calculation and EES. This report
talks in length about the scope of the CEP, methodology employed, parametric
study, and discusses the results obtained. Results obtained are shown with the
help of graphs and tables to better grasp the concept.

2. Calculations
2.1. Design Specifications
Following were the steps involved in designing this CEP.
 Enthalpy
 Entropy
 Pressure
 Temperature
 Work Done
 Mass Flowrate
 Thermal Efficiency
2.2. Given Data
 Turbine 1 Inlet Pressure = 8 Mpa
 Condenser Pressure = 0.008 MPa
 Turbine 1 temperature = 480 º C

2.5. Formulas
𝑋𝑛 = 𝑆𝑛 − 𝑆𝑓/𝑆𝑔 − 𝑆𝑓
𝐻𝑛 = 𝐻𝑓 + 𝑥𝑛𝐻𝑓𝑔
𝑌’ = 𝐻11 − 𝐻10/𝐻2 − 𝐻12
𝑌” = ((1 − 𝑌’)𝐻8 + 𝑌’𝐻13 – 𝐻9))/(𝐻8 − 𝐻5)
Work done by turbine:

𝑊𝑡1/𝑚 = (𝐻1 − 𝐻2) + (1 − 𝑌’)(𝐻2 − 𝐻3)

𝑊𝑡2/𝑚 = (1 − 𝑌’)(𝐻4 − 𝐻5) + (1 − 𝑌’ − 𝑌”) (𝐻5 − 𝐻6)
Work Done by Pump:
𝑊𝑝1/𝑚 = (1 − 𝑌’ − 𝑌’’)(𝐻8 − 𝐻7)
𝑊𝑝2/𝑚 = (𝐻10 − 𝐻9)
Total heat added:
𝑄𝑖𝑛/𝑚 = (𝐻1 − 𝐻11) + (1 − 𝑌’)(𝐻4 − 𝐻3)
Thermal efficiency:

𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 = (𝑊𝑡 – 𝑊𝑝)/𝑄𝑖𝑛

Mass Flow Rate:
𝑀 = 𝑊𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑒 / (𝑊𝑡 – 𝑊𝑝

5. EES (Engineering Equation Solver)

EES is a general equation- solving program capable of solving hundreds of non-

linear algebraic and differential equations. EES has built-in functions for the
thermodynamic and properties of many substances EES can easily do parametric
study.

6. Conclusion
The aim of this CEP was to understand how Power plant works and how different
operations inside it take place and how to use mathematical/theoretical concepts
while doing a project or a solving a real-world problem.
We also analyzed how varying different parameters effect the efficiency of the
system.
