Question (1)

Rectangular box culvert having the following data:

• The passing discharge through culvert is 2.5 m3/s (for 1:25 year return period)
• Dimension of box culvert 1 (2.5 x 1.5), n =0.013
• The maximum allowable velocity for wadi DS of culvert outlet is 1.5 m/s
• Culvert slope is 0.02 m/m.
• Tail water depth is 0.5 m

It's required to:

A. Construct a fully dynamic Excel spreadsheet that could be used to design therequired
protection works DS of culvert by different equations.
B. Use Hydraulic Toolbox to design the protection work DS of culvert and comparebetween
Hydraulic Toolbox results and results obtain from different design equations (item 1).
C. Plot the relation between D50 versus Outlet Velocity of culvert (assume the crosssection of Wadi
Ds of culvert is a rectangular section with bed width of 3 m, manning coefficient of 0.04, slope of
wadi is 0.015 m/m).

Question (2)

Rafha /Arar is an existing paved road with width of (W= 8+Student Section No) in Northern
Borders in Saudi Arabia. Wadi Badana intersect the road at station 00+564. a concrete pipe
culvert (2ϕ900 mm) and concrete box culvert (2 X 1.5 m) are used to convey Wadi flow
under the existing road. The culvert US invert level is 698.33, DS invert level is 697.73, culvert
length is (L = 55-Student BN) and square edge wall is used as an inlet wall. The expected
maximum flow rate from Wadi Badana is 50 m3/s. The road profile is shown in table 1 and the
cross section of natural wadi down stream of culvert is shown in table 2. The average wadi slope
is 0.0001 with average manning coefficient of 0.025.

It's required to get by using Culvert Master Software the following:

A. Calculate the Normal depth and average wadi velocity.

B. plot the relation between flow rate and wadi normal depth (Rating curve).

C. Is the existing culvert safe or unsafe?

No, it is unsafe.

D. What is the capacity of existing pipe and box culvert?

E. Plot the relation between both head water elevation and tail water elevation and flow rates and
illustrate the results.

F. What is the outlet velocity from the culvert?

V1 =5.164 m/s , V2=3.811 m/s

G. State the overtopped flow rate and depth of water above the existing road.

D= 1.775 m
H. what is the discharge coefficient Cr, submergence coefficient Kt and weir overtopping
coefficient Cd?

Caffeinate =3.02, Kt=1

I. What are the parameter C, M, Y,K for the used inlet wall?
J. If the decision is to keep the existing culvert without any change, what is the minimum safe
road levels (Assume Free board between Head water elevation and road level does not exceed
on 40 cm)

K. If the box culvert is used with width of 2.0m and height of 1.5 m, Determine the number of
vents such that H/d does not exceed 1.2?

7 vents

L. Plot the relation between overtopping flow and both head water and the flow rate for the case
of box culvert.
Question (3)

Existing culvert is used to control the flow from existing Pond which has the following data:

• Lowest elevation of pond = 483

• Highest elevation of the ground around
pond = 504The data of existing culvert are
summarized as follow:

• 2 (1.65 x 1.65)
• USIL = 497.1
• DSIL = 497.05
• L = 19.5 m
• N = 0.013

The storage elevation curve of pond is given as shown in table (3)

Its required to get the flowing by using EPASWMM software (you can download the source from Storm
Water Management Model (SWMM) |US EPA )
1- Estimate the outflow hydrograph from Pond.

2- Plot the variation of velocity along existing culvert.

3- Plot the variation of the stored
volume, Head, and depth in the pond
with time.4- Is culvert being
sufficient to control the flow or not.
5- If it's required to control the water level in the pond at level of 490. what is the suitable
dimension of outlet structure in this case?
