Description of the Field Experience Activity and Your Role: Grade Level Meetings Weekly

PART II: REFLECTION

A grade level team is sometimes referred to as a continuous improvement team. Many schools utilize grade
level teams that meet regularly to discuss grade level practices, instruction, effectiveness of instruction, student
growth, and in some cases team policies, behavior, and areas/needs for improvement. Our school grade level
teams help to ensure consistency in by allowing for all teachers of a particular grade to share and bring
successes and challenges to the table. Another benefit for grade level teams is reduced teacher stress and
burnout. In addition, grade level teams invite the expertise of each individual person on the team to present
itself as a resource for addressing challenges, so students can be flexibly grouped to work on emerging skills
with a teacher that has capacity and interest in running the small group - the teacher doesn't always have to be
the "official" teacher, either. Each grade level teams work to establish a shared vision for the school year and
state their priorities for achieving that vision. Along with drawing a vision, they set academic, social, or
behavioral goals that each of the teachers work on together. Visions and goals are documented, measurable,
and referred to at least monthly to ensure progress is being made. Also, grade level teams serve as the drivers
of the tier 1 instruction for students.

During weekly grade level meetings, Mr. Floyd discusses the agenda for the week. The meeting is always set up
in the format of Engage, Explore, Empower, and Reflection. To engage everyone, he usually tries to give us an
opportunity to think about a topic and express ourselves. This is refreshing being that we have busy school days,
and it gives everyone the opportunity to speak. Also, he opens the floor for anyone to “Share something good.”
Shortly after, we focus on the business part of the school month; this may include important dates, deadlines,
upcoming events, changes, etc. To empower us, he gives a monthly report on school behavior and referrals.
Before the meeting is dismissed, he opens the floor for any issues or concerns.
