DRIVER INSTRUCTIONS
The ELME Model 572 empty container handler is a technically advanced piece of
equipment which, if it is carefully used and maintained will serve it´s purpose for many
years.
DESCRIPTION.
The 572 empty container handler is designed for the safe handling of two empty
containers one on top of the other, where both containers are positivly engaged to the
spreader. This enables two containers to be handled with no risk of the upper container
sliding off in a critical situation.
The spreader engages both containers from the rear by inserting twistlocks into the
side pockets of the upper corner casting of the lower container and the lower corner
casting of the top container. This means that both containers can be stacked with no
space between the ends of the stacked containers.
The 572 has a capacity of 10 metric tons and can handle 20' and 40' ISO containers.
When equipped with stops (optional), 30' ISO and 35' sea land containers can also be
handled.
Various heights of container ( 8ft,8ft6",9ft, 9ft6") can be handled by this spreader.
The end beams are designed to handle various widths of container.
The spreader has a mechanical pile slope which enables the angle of the spreader to
be moved up and down 1.5°. The pile slope feature gives the driver the possibility of
raising and lowering the spreader after the twistlocks at one end have been engaged
with a container, so that the twistlocks at the other end can be aligned accuratly with
the corner castings before they are inserted by driving the truck forward.
The spreader can also be used to handle one container at a time by useing the lower
twistlock pair. NOTE The upper pair of twistlocks must never be used to lift a load
with.
OPERATION
1. The spreader is equipped with two control panels, one on each of the spreaders
end beams. Each control panel has six indicator lights:

INDICATOR LIGHTS
The indicator light panels have 6 lamps (2 rows of 3 ). Each row of lights consists of
a Red, Yellow and Green lamp. The top row of lights indicates the condition of the
upper twistlocks at both ends of the spreader. NOTE both lamp panels indicate
simultaneously the condition of both twistlocks, in other words one light panel is not
for one twistlock, it indicates the condition of both the left and right twistlocks at the
same time.
- The Red lamps indicate that the twistlocks are in the ”NOT LOCKED” position.
With an unloaded spreader as the initial position, the light panel will show 4 red lights
illuminated. This indicates that the twistlocks are open and ready to be inserted in the
corner castings of a container or of two containers.
- The Yellow lamp is for ”SEATED” This lamp will illuminate as soon as both twistlocks
or all four twistlocks are fully inserted into the corner castings of the container or
containers. When this lamp switches on both the Red and the Yellow lamps will be
on together. It is then possible to activate the twistlocks to the locked position.
- As soon as the twistlocks have turned, the green lights will switch on and the Red
lights will switch off. The Green lights indicate that the twistlocks are ”LOCKED” and
it is then safe to begin to lift the load.
As soon as the spreader takes the weight of the containers the Yellow lights will
switch off and only the green lights will remain on.
- When depositing the containers the Yellow "SEATED" lights must first be switched on
before the twistlocks can be activated to the "NOT LOCKED" position.
Each work shift should be started by making a visual check of the unit ( this must
be part of the daily routine.) Possible damage will in this way be discovered at an
early stage and enable repairs to be carried out at a much lower cost.
NOTE - NEVER USE THE UNIT UNLESS ALL SAFETY DEVICES FUNCTION
CORRECTLY

Check the operation of the twist locks and of the ”LOCKED” and ”NOT LOCKED”
warning lights
- Activate the twist locks to the ”NOT LOCKED” position.
- Approach the container with the mast almost vertical. Line the spreader up with the
container and enter one of the lower twistlocks into the side aperture of the
container’s upper corner casting.
By raising or lowering the spreader / mast, line the twistlock at the other end of the
spreader, up with the corner casting aperture at the other end of the container. As
soon as both twistlocks are in the corner castings drive the truck forward until the
Yellow "SEATED" lights illuminate and then activate the twistlock button until the
Green "LOCKED" lights switch on. The spreader is now locked onto the container
and is ready to lift it.
4. Depositing a container
- Always keep the mast vertical when depositing a container either on the ground, on
another container or on a trailer.
- When the ”SEATED” light (yellow) switches on, tilt the mast forward slightly.
- Activate the twistlock lever until the ”NOT LOCKED” light (red) switches on. The twist
locks are then in the fully unlocked position.
- The truck may now be backed away from the container until the twistlocks are free of
the containers corner castings.
Lifting two containers is very similar to lifting one however it is sometimes necessary
to correct the position of the upper container so that both containers are accuratly
positioned vertically above each other. To do this it is possible to insert and activate
the top twistlocks in the lower corner castings of the upper container and then
sideshift and manipulate the truck until both containers are accuratly positioned on
top of each other. (It is possible to correct a container that is pushed forwards
approx. 100mm and approx. 35mm out of line sideways. As soon as the corner
castings are aligned the truck can be driven forward until the lower twistlocks are
inside the corner castings and the seated light switched on. As soon as the SEATED
lights (yellow) switch on, it is possible to activate the twistlocks to the LOCKED posi
tion. The green indicator light will illuminate as soon as both twistlocks have turned to
the LOCKED position and the spreader is now locked onto both containers which
can be lifted and transported safely.

1. - The nylon wear pads should be inspected for wear at the same time as
their tracks are lubricated. The pads should be replaced when their
thickness is reduced to a point where metal to metal contact is likely
before the next service has to be carried out.
Replacing the wear pads can be done with ordinary hand tools and
without removing the beams.
The drawing above shows where the heads of the twist locks
wear. When the worn part exceeds the area indicated by cross
hatching the twist locks should be replaced.
3. - The extention cylinder support has wear pads under it. These should also
be inspected on a regular basis and replaced before metal to metal
contact occurs.
5 - The side shift wear pads should be inspected for wear at the same time as
lubrication is carried out. The wear pads should be replaced before metal
to metal contact occurs.

2 - Before removing the securing pin pos.1 of the extension cylinder it must be
supported by a small hydraulic jack or likewise so that the cylinder pos. B
does not fall down.
Remove the pin from the rear of the cylinder fig1 pos 1 (opposite end to the
piston rod) and at the same time also remove the hose and electrical
connections at the rear of the extension cylinder pos. B. The securing bracket
that secures the cable chain to the track in the bottom of the extension beam
should also be disconnected.
3 - By using a crane or fork lift truck pull the end beam pos. A out approx. 50cm so
that it is just possible to get into the inspection hole pos.C in the top of the
beam.
4 - Remove the pin from the piston rod end of the extension cylinder.
5 - The extension cylinder pos. B can now be lifted out of the spreader by sliding it
horisontally with the help of suitable lifting equipment, (by "suitable lifting
equipment" is meant that the crane or truck must be capable of lifting 150kg .)
until the slider pads slide out of the rail by which the foot of the cylinder is
guided.
