IV. Directions: Solve the following problem below. Write your solution
on a clean sheet of paper.

1. The amount of oil used by a ship travelling at a uniform speed varies jointly with the distance
and the square of the speed. If the ship uses 200 barrels of oil in traveling 200 miles at 36 miles
per hour, determine how many barrels of oil are used when the ship travels 360 miles at 18 miles
per hour.

2. The time to complete a project varies inversely with the number of employees. If 3 people can
complete the project in 7 days, how long will it take 5 people?

3. The number of revolutions made by a tire traveling over a fixed distance varies inversely with
the radius of the tire. A 12-inch radius tire makes 100 revolutions to travel a certain distance.
How many revolutions would a 16-inch radius tire require to travel the same distance?

4. The number of gallons g of fuel used on a trip varies directly with the number of miles m
traveled. If a trip of 270 miles required 12 gallons of fuel, how many gallons are required for a
trip of 400 miles?

5. A flag that is 2 inches high with a base of 1.5 inches has an area of 1.5 square inches. The area
of a triangle varies jointly with the base and height. Find the area of a flag whose base measures
2 inches and height is 2.5 inches.

6. A bus from Mabini to Bauan travels at a constant speed of 30 miles per hour and covers a
distance of 270 miles in 9 hours. The speed of a bus varies directly with the distance covered and
inversely with the time taken. Determine the speed of the train, if it travels a distance of 248
miles in 6.2 hours.

7. Arlene’s stadium has a seating capacity for 25,000 spectators. The stadium has 25 exits and
can be vacated in 20 minutes. The time taken to exit the stadium varies directly with the number
of spectators and inversely with the number of exits. Determine the time taken for 21,000
spectators to vacate the stadium, if only 15 exits are functional.
