February 28, 2024

Instructions: Show all work. Credit, partial or full, will be given only if sufficient steps leading to the answer are
shown. (In most problems no credit will be given for answers only.) Erase or cross out work you do not want graded.
This test is due on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 5:30 pm. Collaboration with other students or professors
is NOT permitted. You may use your textbook, notes, or any other written resource. Please provide solutions
on your own paper. The total is 75 points.
1. (6 pts) Prove that if G is a group and a, b∈G, then |ab|=|ba|.

2. (8 pts) Let G = { a + b√3 | a,b are rational numbers not both 0}. Prove that G is a group
under ordinary multiplication.

3. (8 pts) Use Euclidean Algorithm to find gcd(2506, 121) and then write it as a linear
combination of 2506 and 121.

4. (6 pts) Suppose a group contains elements a and b such that |a|=3, |b|=2, and ab=ba. Find
|ab|. Show all work.

5. (8 pts) If H and K are subgroups of G, show that H∩K is a subgroup of G.

6. (11 pts)
(a) Construct a Cayley table for U(9).
(b) Find the inverse of each element of U(9).
(c) Find the order of each element of U(9).
(d) Is U(9) Abelian? Explain why.

7. (12 pts) Let G be a group and let H be a subgroup of G. For any fixed x in G, define
xHx-1 = { xhx-1 | h ÎH}. Prove the following.
a) xHx-1 is a subgroup of G.
b) If H is Abelian, then xHx-1 is Abelian.

8. (8 pts) How many subgroups does ℤ24 have? List a generator for each of these subgroups.
Find a subgroup lattice of ℤ24.

9. (8 pts) Suppose the following table represents a group. Fill in the blank entries.

e a b c
e e a b c
a a e
b
c c e
