WHAT IS
LEADERSHIP
This is a kind of social influence in a group with the
expectation of achieving common goals. Accordingly, the
leader is a person who has this influence.

Leadership is the process of organizing work in a group,

where the leader is a person who is listened to and
trusted.
The leader can be either appointed (formal leader) or
chosen by the group (informal leader).

Recently, leadership has acquired many different

concepts, because you can look at it in different ways.
Various explanations were given as to how leadership
arose and how to define a leader. They are better known
as leadership theories.

THE THEORY OF LEADERSHIP

Thomas Carlyle Francis Galton Ralph Stogdill

1841 1869 1948

THE THEORY OF LEADERSHIP
Thomas Carlyle in his 1841 book On Heroes, Hero-
Worship, & the Heroic in History formulated a theory
about a "great man".

The theory became very popular and brought to the fore

the idea that great leadership was based on certain
abilities that leaders possessed. For a long time it was
believed that the traits of a leader are not acquired, but
innate.

It was developed in Francis Galton's 1869 work

"Hereditary Genius". According to their ideas, since
only unique outstanding people change the world
significantly: Napoleon, Martin Luther, then their
inherent leadership abilities
THE THEORY OF LEADERSHIP
Important conclusions were made by Ralph Stogdill. He
argued that leadership takes place among all people,
not just “special people”.

Studies have shown that everything is not so

unambiguous. Although innate characteristics sometimes
help to become a leader, but much depends on the
qualities and skills that can be developed and external
circumstances.
STOGDILL'S CONCLUSIONS

1. Studies of traits conducted before that did not take

into account how exactly this or that trait is used by
leaders. Some leadership traits were given more
attention than others, but this proved nothing. It is
important to find and explore specific traits that are
more important than others.

2. The traits that a leader possesses should correspond to

the situation in which he functions. In essence, this means
that leaders in one situation don't necessarily have to be
leaders in other situations.
