Types of development disability

Learning problems can be described as difficulties with academic achievement and

progress between personal potential for learning and what he actually learns.

Causes of learning problems

1. Some children at a slower rate than others in the same age.

2. Injuries before birth and early childhood.

3. Genetics.

4. Children born prematurely and those who had problems soon after birth.

Signs & symptoms of children with learning disability

 Problems with reding mathematics and comprehensions.

 Problems with writing, spelling and reading written language.

 Difficulties in performing arithmetic operations or understanding basic concepts.

 Difficulties in reasoning or interpreting thoughts.

 Difficulties in remembering information and following instructions.

 Poor performance in group test.

 Slowness in completing the work.

 Poor organisation skills

 Difficulty in problem solving skills i.e. difficulties in differentiating colour and size.

Mental retardation – it is also known as intellectual disability which encompasses a variety

of conditions characterised by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviours.


Hearing problems – is an impairment in the ability to perceive sounds accurately or at all,

potentially resulting in difficulties understanding speech, participating in conversation, or

fully experiencing the auditory environment.
