Activity 1. How does a nurse demonstrate Caring?

Please give 1 situational example to each of the 5 categories of caring. 1-2 sentences only. Be direct. Be
concise.

1) Knowing the Client

A unconscious patient was brought in the emergency room of the hospital together with his
guardian. As the attending nurse in charge, you ask what cause the patient to become
unconscious to his guardian since you cannot ask the patient directly for you to know what
nursing interventions to accomplish.

2) Nursing Presence
A patient admitted in a hospital has no family or friends with her. As a nurse, you always make
time to visit her and ensures to be there for her and give her the care that she truly needs as a
patient.

3) Empowering the Client

A patient who was diagnosed with gastroparesis will have to eat only liquid foods through a
tube is embarrassed and doesn’t want to be seen by other people with the tube on. As a nurse,
you show how you understands where the patient’s feeling is coming from so you help her
boost her self-esteem.

4) Compassion
A patient who happens to be someone you really hated when you were in high school came to
the hospital. As an empathetic nurse instead of dealing with your hatred to the client, you
treated him with kindness and empathized with what the patient is going through.

5) Competence
A patient is experiencing diarrhea, as the attending nurse you placed a heating pad on your
patient’s lower back or abdomen and gave the patient a period of sleep or rest.
