Music teaching assignment 1

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module a successful student will be able to:
1. Utilise key pedagogic principles vital to music learning
2. Create lesson outcomes and learning outcomes and devise a
programme of study
3. Give accurate and developmental feedback and demonstrate how to
identify and assess students’ progress

Assignment Brief
The portfolio proposal will consist of two lesson plans (using the provided lesson plan
template) along with a 500-word rationale which justifies the various inclusions and
components of your proposed 10-week portfolio. The lesson plans are not included in the
word count.
Lesson plans should include teaching aims, lesson outcomes; teaching and learning
activities; timings; resources; formative evaluation strategies and provisions for student
differentiation.
The rationale will be an overview of the content and approach to your proposed ten-week
module, your teaching strategy should be supported by pedagogic theories using Harvard
referencing conventions when appropriate. Please refer to the further reading sections of
the weekly units, along with the module reading list for sources to reference when
justifying your lesson plan/portfolio contents.
Your work should:
Include reference to the pedagogical theories and related concepts explored in class to date
(where relevant). These include but are not limited to:
• Bloom’s Taxonomy
• Hattie’s Effect Sizes
• Feedback and Formative Evaluation
• Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

• Tuckman’s Group Development Model

• Differences in Adult and Child Learning: Andragogy vs Pedagogy
• Adult vs Child Teaching Methods
• Learning Styles
You may include other pedagogical/andragogical theories or concepts not covered in class
if you can sufficiently justify their inclusion in your proposed portfolio. Reference to
credible researchers and articles/texts is especially important in these cases and a strong
evidencing of their application in the two lesson plans is suggested.
Assessment Criteria
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
• Demonstrate key pedagogical principles in their own teaching.
• Develop and deliver appropriate programmes of study, demonstrating consideration
of individual learning needs and differentiation.
• Provide opportunities for feedback and formative assessment
This Assessment Must Contain:
• Two lesson plans from the proposed portfolio using the provided lesson plan
template on Canvas.
• A 500-word write up justifying the pedagogical approaches and design decisions of
the portfolio.
• A bibliography and in-text citations consistent with Harvard Referencing Format
Research Recommendations:
Refer to the module reading list, the further reading appendices in each unit, and the
suggested journals on Canvas for source material to justify your portfolio contents.
