II. Scanning
1. What is scanning?
Scanning is moving your eyes quickly over the text to look for specific information or
details without having to read the whole text.
2. Steps
a. Step 1: Read the question and underline the signals
o Capital letters: Raymond, London, Japan ...
o Numbers: June 10th, 30 km, 5000 people ...
o Symbols: 10%, $45, man@gmail.com
o Bold or italic type
o Keywords: words in the questions that directly relate to the information you need to
find
b. Step 2: Move your eyes quickly over the text to find the signals
Note: the keywords in the text might be:
o Exactly the same as in the questions, OR
o Similar to the words in the questions / paraphrase
2. Match the information above to the following. Write down the letter of the paragraph
where you find the information.
a. ______ Movie name
b. ______ Name of a person who works with robots
c. ______ Number of people working on a project
d. ______ Computer technique
e. ______ Number of computer controls
f. ______ Computer model
3. Read the passage “Computer Generations of Animated Characters” and complete
these sentences using NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS.
