INTRODUCTION
In every organization employees are the driving forces that run the day to day operations of the
company. With employees being human capital investing in employees, helps foster employee
development. However, this investing goes hand in hand with studying organizational behavior.
Therefore, this essay will explain in details what, employee development is, its importance and finally its
relationship with organizational behavior. The writing will conclude by explaining what the writer leant
that was not expected and how he can use it in his professional life

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR
Organizational behavior is the study of how individuals act when they have been grouped to work
together to achieve company goals. (Brooks, I. 2006).

IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR TO THE

COMPANY
Organizational behavior is important and here are some of the reasons below.

1. Organizational behavior is important and worth studying as it helps us study people’s habits,
cultures, and ethics.

2. It helps us understand the connection between employees and their superiors.

3. It helps us study attitudes, goals, customs, and beliefs of an organization.

We all know that employees are the backbone of every company. These are the important assets of the
company who run day to day operations. However, employees are not the same in terms of skill and
adaptations. Some are more skilled or experienced in a specific field than others. Therefore, it is the
duty of the company to promote, educate and invest in employee development. But in order for us to
know more we have to understand what employee development is.

WHAT IS EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT

At a high level of company performance employee development is a process of working with employees
to improve, refine, and enhance existing skills but also develop newer ones in support of the
organizations mission and goals (Mullins, L. J. 2008).”

If employee development is done right by management the results are outstanding since these newly
taught skills will pay off over a longer term.
IMPORTANCE OF EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT
Performance improvement
 For a company to be competitive the organization has to find ways of outperforming its
competition. One of the ways of doing this is through employee development as it helps
the organization to meet the expected performance levels and sometimes exceed them.

Improved handling of unexpected situations

 Today’s business world is all about change. It can be digital, pandemics, financial etc.
Having a well-defined employee development program that makes employees
adaptable will do good for the company as it will help employees handle the
unexpected. An example of this is the corona virus pandemic that hit hard the business
world in2020 forcing employees to work at home. Employees need to adapt to the
unexpected situation and cope with it by working from home with the same expected
performance through improved digital devices (Cole, 1995).

Help grow potentially good employees into great leaders

 Every organization needs leaders for it to survive on the market since these are the
people who set goals and make decisions that are best for the organization. With this
being the case, an organization needs to build a continuous stream of future to be
leaders. Adding leadership employee development programs can do good for the
organization. Statistics show that an organization with strong leadership has a 37% rise
in revenue per employee and a 9% gross profit margin, according to a report by Bergin.

Improve employee engagement and motivation

 An organization which has a workforce that is fully committed and engaged at every
level has high chances of success than the other way around. Therefore, driving
employee engagement so that they remain motivated to the company’s goals yields
many results such as; good working environment, employee satisfaction, recognition
and appreciation. These will lead to employee loyalty to the film thereby serving it for
years (Cole, 1995).

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND

EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT

Since organizational behavior is studying how people act when they have been grouped to work
together this has a huge impact on employee development. We have to bear in mind that employees
differ in a lot of ways and below are some of them

DIFFERENCES IN BELIEFS AND CUSTOMS

 People have the freedom to believe whatever they want. Religious differences and
customs can impact the relationship amongst employees when grouped to work
together.
 For example, Muslims play on Friday whilst in many countries which the
majority of the people are Christians or earthiest recognize Friday as a working
day. These differences impact employee development since some managers
might find it unreasonable to allow the employee attend his religious gatherings
as this will disturb his work, leaving the employee disturbed, therefore
disturbing overall his employee development.

DIFFERENCES IN POSITIONS
 There are managers who support employee development while others ignore it.
Managers who go hard on their employees are feared and not respected therefore
employees always panic working when they are around. This disturbs employee
development since the relationship of the employee and his superior is broken some
errors and mistakes will not be reported declining the yield of the company.

Differences in company structure and culture

 Every company has its own culture and structure. This is the way the company decides
to operate. The structure and culture are the rule and law of the company. Sometimes it
happens that the culture or structure of the company does not please everyone.
 At Japanese tobacco company the current structure is that employees should
work in three shifts 8 hours a day. The operations department is happy with the
system claiming that 8 hours is normal and employees concentrate well on the
work. They believe that making employees work more than 8hours a day makes
them tired therefore lose concentration and this leads to unnecessary errors.
The finance department would like to change the structure to 10 hours a day
this will make employees work long hours but for 4 days a week therefore the
company will save money for transportation and accommodation. These
differences affect employee development since they receive whatever decision
that comes to them by management.

EFFECTS OF POOR ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR ON

EMPLOYEE DEVELOMENT
 Poor performance
 Going through emotions whilst during work
 Frequent turn overs
 Frequent conflict and complaints

WHAT HAS THE WRITER LEARNT THAT WAS NOT EXPECTED

I as the writer has learnt that the study of organizational behavior or else having a good organizational
behavior program does not only benefit the company but the employees as well.

IS THERE SOMETHING THAT THE WRITER CAN APPLY

IMMEDIATELY INHIS PROFFESSIONAL LIFE IF SO WHAT IS IT
AND HOW WILL HE INCOPERATE IT
I work as a seasonal clerk at JTI and there is a portal that advices us to come up with ideas that can help
the company. With the learning of this course I feel raising an idea for the company to develop a
program that focuses on employee development by studying organizational behavior.

HOW CAN THIS REPORT IMPROVE THEORGANIZATION

MARKETPLACE POSITION FROM AN ORGANIZATIONAL
BEHAVIOR PERSPECTIVE?
This report has focused on employee development using the importance of studying organizational
behavior. If done right even though giving management and employees organizational behavior training
requires investment (time, effort and financing) from the company, those investment will more than
payoff the initial invested amount for the longer term therefore improving the organizations market
share for decades.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion This report has talked about the importance of organizational behavior in the working
environment. In has also talked about employee development and how it is mainly affected by
organizational behavior, If the company’s organizational behavior understanding is poor then employee
development suffers. If the company has good rules for organizational behavior then employee
development is boosted.
