Lecture:

Choosing appropriate operations and approaches based on the

context of a problem is crucial for effective problem-solving. This involves
defining the problem clearly, analyzing its context, and identifying
objectives. Assessing available tools and techniques, considering
computational complexity, and balancing trade-offs are essential steps.
Exploring alternative solutions and iteratively refining approaches
contribute to informed decision-making. Leveraging domain expertise and
staying updated ensure operations align with the problem domain’s
intricacies.

The Addition of Fractions is the method of finding the sum of two

fractions. To add two fractions, we first make their denominators same (by
LCM methods) and the numerators, keeping the new denominator
common.

Example: Adding fractions with common denominators:

3 2
1. 5 + 5 =

Solution:
Since both fractions have the same denominator, we can directly add their
numerators and keep the denominator unchanged:
3 2 3+2 5
+ = = =1
5 5 5 5
2. Adding fractions with different denominators:

1 1
+ =
3 6
Solution:
To add fractions with different denominators, we first find a common
denominator. In this case, the least common multiple (LCM) of 3 and
6 is 6. We rewrite each fraction with the common denominator:
1 2 1
becomes 6 and 6 remains the same. Then, we add the fractions:
2
2 1 2+1 3 1
+ = = =
6 6 6 6 2
3 2
3. Emily baked two pies. She ate 4 of one pie and 3 of the other pie.
What fraction of all the pies did she eat?
Solution:
To find the fraction of all pies Emily ate, we add the fractions
representing the portions of each pie she consumed. First, let’s find a
3 2
common denominator for 4 and 3 . The LCM of 4 and 3 is 12. We
rewrite the fractions with a common denominator:
3 9 2 8
= 12 and 3 = 12
4
Now, we add the fractions:
9 8 9 + 8 17
+ = =
12 12 12 12
17
Since 12 represents more than one whole pie, we can see that Emily
12 5
ate 12 (which is one whole pie) and 12 of another pie. Thus, she
𝟓
ate 𝟏 of all the pies.
