Problem1
The countershaft shown has two spur gears mounted on it. The gear forces shown in figure cause
resultant moments at A and B of 2720N.m and 5150N.m respectively. A uniform diameter, cold drawn
steel shaft having Sy=324MPa and Su=386 MPa is to be used for the shaft. Find a safe diameter using a
factor of safety of 2.5.
Use the Matlab program beam_load_analysis_modified.m to determine the moment distribution.

Problem2
A circular disc, of diameter 2r and mean thickness t, simply supported at its periphery. When horizontal, it
will deflect under it own weight according to the following relation:
3 𝑚𝑔𝑟 2
𝛿=
4𝜋 𝐸𝑡 3
The objective is to minimize the mass of the disc while the constraints are:
1-Radius r is specified.
2-The disc must not distort more than d under its own weight
3-The thickness is the free dimension.
Determine the material Index M that satisfies the above objectives and constraints.

Problem 3
Shown in the figure is a uniform-diameter shaft with bearing shoulders at the ends; the shaft is subjected
to a concentrated moment M = 1200 lbf · in. The shaft is of carbon steel and has a = 5 in and l = 9 in. The
slope at the ends must be limited to 0.002 rad. Find a suitable diameter d.

Problem 4
A solid round bar, 25 mm in diameter, has a groove 2.5-mm deep with a 2.5-mm radius machined into it.
The bar is made of AISI 1018 CD steel and is subjected to a purely reversing torque of 200 N · m
(a) Estimate the number of cycles to failure.
(b) If the bar is also placed in an environment with a temperature of 450◦C, estimate the number of cycles
to failure.

Problem 5
A rectangular bar is cut from an AISI 1018 cold-drawn steel flat. The bar is 60 mm wide by 10 mm thick
and has a 12-mm hole drilled through the center as depicted in Table A–15–1. The bar is concentrically
loaded in push-pull fatigue by axial forces Fa, uniformly distributed across the width. Using a design factor
of 𝑛𝑑 = 1.8, estimate the largest force Fa that can be applied ignoring column action.
