Work and Management
1. How do you define work.
- Work is a physical job that requires conscious thinking and doing. It is a series of
following the plan and improvising in case things don’t go according to plan.

2. What functions does work serve in modern society?

- Work in modern society is transactional in nature. The connotation, “nothing is free in
this world,” stands true in the functions of work in modern society. We’re going to
discuss the topped searched functions of work in modern society:
First, economic function. Money is the driving factor for the economy to work, so people
work in exchange for a certain amount of money equivalent to the service they
rendered.
Second, regulating life activities. Work also means opportunities and growth. Through
working endless possibilities opens for an individual, thus prompting them to work
continuously and regulate their life activities.
Third, identity. Work is tied with identity. What an individual does for a living is his
“social status nametag.” While it is sad that we label people based on their work, it’s
true in most cases. Those who has white collared-jobs have higher self-esteem and are
on top of the food chain in comparison to those with blue-collared jobs.

3. What do you think will be the extent and nature of the challenges facing the workplace in the
next decade?
- We think there are 2 possible challenges in the next decade: either the workplace will
face influx of aspiring employees, or the workplace will suffer with lack of new
generation workers.
First, for countries like the Philippines where manpower is the main resources,
unemployment and underemployment has always been an issue.
Second, for countries with graying population where the workplace is dominated by
older people, it is a growing concern that no one will replace the workforce.

4. What can be done about these challenges?

- For unemployment and underemployment concerns, it is a matter of government
policies. The country’s government should prioritize hiring locals first before outsourcing
manpower. For example, the Australian government during the pandemic set a policy for
companies to hire or to prioritize hiring Australian citizens.
For countries with graying population, they can open their country to immigrants. For
example, the United States of America’s is open to immigrant workers––with almost half
of recorded workers are immigrants.
5. How do you define management?
- To achieve corporate objectives, management refers to how companies plan and
coordinate operations, personnel, and workflow. It could also refer to the management
act or art, which is the leading or overseeing a business, task, or system.

6. Discuss the role of management in the larger societal context. What do you think the
managers of the future will be like?
- Management in the larger societal context may affect a society’s economic
development, this is because innovation, productivity, and market competitiveness can
all rise as a result of efficient and successful management, which in turn may result to
either a heathy economy or a downfall. Managers make judgments and take actions that
have a big impact on the community at large in addition to their enterprises the
management have the responsibility to uphold their morality and integrate ethical
business practices, and sustainable management.
We think, managers of the future will be required to possess a certain set of traits that
correspond with the changing economic and societal environment. These managers will
need to demonstrate extremely flexible leadership as they negotiate the quick changes
in markets, technology, and social expectations. We deem it crucial for managers to have
deeper knowledge with technology, which means they must be not just at ease but also
skilled at using digital tools and comprehending evolving technologies. Future managers
must be able to navigate foreign business environments with skill and understand varied
cultures due to the global nature of the economy. Future managers will also need to be
emotionally intelligent in order to effectively navigate and comprehend their own
emotions as well as those of their teams since the advancement of prioritizing mental
health.

7. What do you think are the critical issues facing managers in the future? Explain.
- The critical issues that may be faced by managers in the future are the forceful
advancement and emerging of technologies into corporate operations. This will be vital
in order to navigate the rapid improvements in technology, which pose a significant
challenge since not every person is a technology savvy. Future managers may also face
hardships when balancing corporate plans with social and environmental
responsibilities, this is because some decisions are to be made logically and some are
harder to handle compared to the other. Future managers, just like managers now, may
also be under constant pressure to cultivate a culture of creativity, adaptability, and
ongoing learning within their teams due to the continuous desire for innovation. This
may become a critical issue for future managers because they may not handle the
pressure and just leave the organization or job all-together.
