The blanks are based on a design which has received type approval from Lloyds Register of Shipping, Bureau Veritas and the American Bureau of Shipping. Each blank is marked with the following a) Vessel's name b) Purpose of aperture ¢) Position of aperture by frame and’side (P or S) where known. d) Size of aperture (note - not the size of blank) e) Maximum safe working depth f) Classification Society inspection marks (where applicable) Although an adequate safety factor is included in the design the‘ maximum safe working depth MUST NOT BE EXCEEDED. Sealing is achieved by the use of a soft neoprene gasket which will accommodate any curvature in the hull plate adjacent to the aperture. Each aperture blank is designed to overlap the aperture and rest on the hull plating. Accurate positioning is not generally found necessary (+ 25mm) as adequate overlaps are allowed in the design of the blank. The blank is initially held in place by mechanical fastenings. After release of the internal pressure in the ship's system, sea water pressure forces the blank against the hull to make the seal. The cover is totally supported by the hull shell and does not contact the grating (if present). it should be noted that the mechanical fastenings are to locate the aperture blank in its correct position and cannot be used by themselves to compress the gasket and provide an adequate seal. Aperture blanks must be installed by divers experienced in this type of work. INSTALLATION 24 SEA CHESTS WITH GRATINGS - See also Figure 1 A 200mm wide strip of hull shell around each aperture must be cleaned of all marine fouling prior to positioning each blank to ensure correct sealing of the gasket. /eontinued... 2.0 UMC-A4-93005 Issue: 2 Page 2 of INSTALLATION (continued) In most cases it will be found more convenient to fit the "T*-bolts, neoprene washers and nuts loosely to the blank before placing it in the water. The identification plate is placed at the top of the aperture blank for correct orientation over the aperture. In the case of blanks for apertures on the flat bottom, the bottom of the blank is positioned towards the centreline, the top towards the waterline. Each blank must be placed symmetrically over the aperture it is intended for, ensuring an equal overlap all round. When positioned properly the “T" bolts can be pushed through the grid and rotated 90 degrees to engage on the bars. The nut is then screwed up tight to hold the blank in place. Release of the pressure in the ship's system by the ship's staff will allow sea pressure to seal the blank firmly over the aperture. The wingnuts should be re-tightened once the gasket is compressed to seal on their gasket washers. Any overtensioning of the "T" bolts may cause distortion and damage to the grating. , Ensure a good flow when releasing the pressure in the system to ensure firm seating of the aperture blank. See also section 2.3 for guidance on releasing the internal pressure. IF the blank has been fitted as described but excessive flow continues when the system is opened, the most likely cause is pressure feeding back from another system and the ship's staff should be asked to check that all other connections to the sea chest involved are shut off. Should unacceptable leakage still occur a diver should check the fit of the blank. A small amount of leakage may occur past the "T" bolts and some may occur if the hull plate has been damaged locally and buckled, thus making a seating of the gasket impossible. In both cases an experienced diver can safely plug the leaks to reduce any seepage. Also ensure that all sea chest vent and drain holes (if present) have been plugged using suitably sized taper plugs. NOTE For convenience of handling by divers, aperture blanks are designed to be slightly positively buoyant when first placed in sea water. When submerged the gasket becomes compressed by the water pressure, the blank will loose some buoyancy and may become slightly negatively buoyant. A recovery line should therefore be attached at all times during installation and recovery. ‘continued... 22 UMC-A4-93005, Issue: 2 P: WARNING IT IS DANGEROUS TO ATTEMPT TO FIT APERTURE BLANKS TO AN INJECTION WHICH IS IN USE EVEN IF THE FLOW OF WATER APPEARS TO BE SMALL. For information specific to this vessel see Appendix A. DISCHARGE TUBES - See also Figure 2 ‘A. 200mm wide strip of hull shell around each aperture must be cleaned of all marine fouling prior to positioning each blank to ensure correct sealing of the gasket. When installing blanks on sea tubes without grids a hook bolt is used to secure the blank. An expanding jack must first be positioned in the discharge tube to act as an anchorage for the hook bolt. If the discharge tube internal diameter is known from the ship's drawings or by direct measurement, the correct expanding jack can be selected using the dimension stamped on the end of the jack. The dimension (mm) indicates the length of the jack at its mid point and is capable of adjustment to fit slightly larger or small bores (+ 10mm). Where a discharge tube is at 90° to the hull shell, the orientation of the jack is immaterial. The jack is positioned across the diameter of the opening approximately 25mm from the end of the tube, and the hook bolt attached. The blank centre will be offset slightly from the centre of the opening. Adequate overlaps have been allowed in the design of the blank to give a suitable seal. Where a discharge tube is not at 90° to the hull shell the aperture takes the shape of an ellipse. The expanding jack must be positioned in the discharge tube across the minor (smaller) diameter of the ellipse. The hook bolt may then be positioned as shown in figure 2 to allow the centre of the blank to lie over the centre of the aperture. Providing there is a minimum overiap all round of 25mm an adequate seal should be obtained. Jacks should normally only require hand tightening to form an adequate anchorage. If the jack slips it may require the use of a suitable spanner or grips. Care should be taken not to distort the jack or the discharge tube. /continued. UMC-A4-93005, Issue: 2 23 It is probably more convenient to assemble the hook bolt, neoprene washer and wing nut onto the blank on the surface - the hook bolt will serve as an anchorage for a safety line and also a hand hold for the diver. Ensure a good flow when releasing the pressure in the system to ensure firm seating of the aperture blank. See also section 2.3 for guidance on releasing the internal pressure. If the blank has been fitted as described but excessive flow continues when the system is opened, the most likely cause is pressure feeding back from another system and the ship's staff should be asked to check that all other connections to. the system involved are shut off. NOTE For convenience of handling by divers, aperture blanks are designed to be slightly positively buoyant when first placed in sea water. When submerged the gasket becomas compressed by the water pressure, the blank will lose some buoyancy and may become slightly negatively buoyant. A recovery line should therefore be attached at all times during installation and recovery. For information specific to this vessel see Appendix B. NOTES ON RELEASING INTERNAL CONNECTION If the valve on the sea tube being blanked is serviceable it should be fully closed. A pipe joint inboard of the valve should then be opened and the valve cracked open to provide a flow of water to "suck" the blank onto the end of the discharge tube. This is the safest method; if a perfect seal is not created the valve may be closed and the blank adjusted. If the valve is deemed to be unserviceable, either jammed open or closed the pipe joint between the valve and hull shell will have to be opened. The safest method is to withdraw one third of the securing bolts and replace with longer bolts allowing enough length to open the joint 10mm. Tighten the bolts and then remove another one third and replace with longer bolts. Finally remove the remaining original bolts. Slacken back the longer bolts to allow the joint to separate and allow the controlled ingress of water. If the blank does not seal after a few seconds the joint must be closed and adjustments made. /continued... 3.0 4.0 5.0 UMC-A4-93005 Issue: 2 REMOVAL, Removal of the aperture blank is the reverse of installation. Ensure the "Took bolts are fully slackened before flooding the sea chest or over- tensioning of the bolts may occur with subsequent damage to the grating or discharge. Care should be taken to attach a line to each blank before removal since some loss of buoyancy occurs due to the compression of the gasket. The compressed gasket will regain its original shape at atmospheric pressure when the gasket has dried. MAINTENANCE OF HULL APERTURE.BLANKS As soon as possible after use, the following maintenance should be carried out: - Thoroughly wash down with fresh water and allow to dry. « - _ Grease the threads of hook bolts, wingnuts and expanding jacks. - - Dust neoprene gasket with French Chalk (or similar) = Re-crate the aperture blanks and bolts and store in dry (but not hot) conditions. Ensure the aperture blanks are packed using appropriate spacer pieces to prevent any compression of the gaskets. If the gasket remains deformed for extended periods then permanent damage may occur preventing a successful seal when next required. GASKET REPLACEMENT Gaskets are easily damaged. Minor damage such as tears may be repaired using contact adhesive. Small indentations and tears do not prevent an adequate seal being obtained. If damage is severe, the gasket may be repaired locally or replaced totally using low density (70 kg/m*) closed cell neoprene. The correct gasket thickness is indicated on the equipment drawing. Gaskets thicker than 25mm. are usually laminated from two layers of material. The material should be dovetailed or scarfed at joints and should be bonded using contact adhesive on both gasket to gasket and gasket to blank joints. Where two layers of gasket material is applied the joints in each layer should be staggered. ‘continued...
